You might say I started early. Some of my first memories of technology -- or of anything, really -- were of mashing the keyboards on Compaq PC clones at my dad's workplace when I was three. Little did I know that I'd started on a path towards technology that would lead me towards mashing the keyboards for a career that would land me here at Engadget.

Honda test house features Smart Home System for controlling energy usage

The term "smart home" seems to turn up in tech circles every so often, only to fade into the background again without much sign of ultra-connected dwellings becoming a reality. Honda's at least putting one foot forward, with a just-unveiled test house in Saitama, Japan featuring a system for controlling and monitoring energy usage. The Honda Smart Home System (HSHS) consists of thin-film solar cell panels, a rechargeable home battery unit, gas and hot water supply systems and the Smart e Mix Manager. The latter is the central part of the energy-control system, and it keeps track of all the other components in addition to monitoring the home's use of power supplied by the grid. In emergency situations, it can also provide electricity via the home battery unit. On the day-to-day level, however, the system is there to let home owners know what sources of power they can kill. Honda also integrates its Japan-only Internavi system for controlling home appliances remotely. The car maker hopes to use the house for extensive demo testing, with an ultimate goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 50 percent. No word on how many decades till we actually call this sort of place home, though. Click on past the break for a look (in Japanese) at the test home's features.

Cyanogenmod 9 struts its stuff on HTC's One X

So you've procured yourself HTC's new super slim, 4.7-inch halo phone: the One X. By now, you probably have the device set up just the way you like it: applications configured, widgets in place and Adele ringtone set. But there's just something else left to do, isn't there? If (like some of us) you're a smartphone user who just can't leave well enough alone, you'll be excited to learn that a build of Cyanogenmod 9 for the Uno Equis has been made available via the MoDaCo forums. The ROM will deliver that stock Android experience, and all those CM9 accoutrements, to those that don't fancy the panache of Sense 4.0. The forum post does caution that the One's camera, and hotspot functionality, aren't currently working, so interested parties best proceed with caution. If all that doesn't phase you, grab a cup of coffee, get the Android SDK all warmed up and take this ROM for a spin!

Akamai: Global Average Connection Speed Dropped 14% In Q4 2011, Down 5.3% in U.S.

According to Akamai's latest State of the Internet report, the average Internet connection speed around the world was 2.3 Mbps by the end of 2011. That's down about 14% from the previous quarter. In the U.S., which ranks thirteenth in this report, the average connection speed in the last quarter of 2011 dropped 5.3% to 5.8 Mbps. In total, eight out of the top 10 countries in Akamai's report saw their average connection speed decline compared to Q3 2011. Worldwide, speeds declined in 93 of the countries included in this report and only increased in 41 countries.

In addition, Doug Vanda Gens, director of product from Ford and business development for electronics said, ?The iPod was a huge hit, and we at Ford wanted a way for people to operate the equipment in their Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle without having to develops with the unit while driving excitement. What we have achieved is the integration with the iPod in our cars is only part of a much larger effort to Ford Motor Company to respond to customer trends more quickly. ?

In 2007 Ford lineup, which is embedded extra audio inputs provided. The relationships can come to your iPod or MP3 player integration with impeccable audio output in the vehicle. Said lineup includes Ford Edge, Mustang, Fusion, Explorer, Expedition, Sport Trac, Ranger, F-150 and more.

Another upcoming offer by Ford is the integration of Sirius radio. Field also noted, ?In 2005, less than half of our cars come with a navigation system, satellite radio or extra audio inputs. For 2007 we have doubled the models with a navigation system and quadrupling the number with Sirius Satellite Radio.?

What Evil Lurks in the Hearts of Hactivists?

Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of IT pros believe their organizations will be the target of a cyberattack in the next six months, and three out of five (61 percent) say the attack will come from hactivists. That was one of the findings in cybersecurity firm Bit9's annual security survey released last week. What's surprising about the survey is the concern given to hacktivist attacks, said Bit9 CTO Harry Sverdlove.
