(AP) ? While teams such as Nigeria want to test themselves against LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, they may have to settle for Kevin Love and Andre Iguodala.

U.S. Olympic men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski already knows what his superstars can do, and doesn't need to be reminded in the kind of blowouts his team routinely racks up during pool play.

What he needs to find out is what would happen if they weren't available, when the Americans were playing against teams that could beat them.

"You don't know who it's going to be that might help us win the gold medal," Krzyzewski said. "I mean, if you look at look at the gold-medal game against Spain in '08, Tayshaun Prince gave us eight points in an abbreviated role that were huge for us, because LeBron and Kobe had two quick fouls each in that game.

"And you know if you don't give these guys that level of experience over an extended period of time, then they may not be ready for those moments, so that's what we're trying to do."

With that in mind, Krzyzewski gave plenty of time to his subs on Tuesday in a 110-63 victory over Tunisia. Iguodala's 20 minutes were one more than James played, while Bryant got on the floor for just 9 minutes, half the time Love received while tying for the team lead with 16 points.

The bench even started the second half, Krzyzewski insisting that was his plan all along and not that he was angry with the first unit. He will probably do plenty of tinkering Thursday night against the Nigerians.

Even without playing their best basketball, the Americans are big and bad as advertised ? romping through their first two games at the London Olympics by an average of 37 points.

But is that reason to be afraid of them?

Nigeria isn't.

"We will not be intimidated by those guys," Ike Diogu, a former top-10 NBA draft pick who has played 225 NBA games, said after Nigeria's 72-53 loss to Lithuania. "A lot of us went to school in the U.S. and have played against those guys. We have no reason to feel overwhelmed."

Nigeria guard Tony Skinn agrees.

"I mean, listen, man, I've been playing ball for a long time," said Skinn, who was part of George Mason's improbable Final Four run in 2006. "At some point in time, I played against those guys or seen those guys play. A lot of us, obviously we're Nigerians, but we play in the States and I don't think we have that mentality to just come in the game and just, you know, get our (butts) whooped."

Skinn and the Patriots beat Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut ? all perennial powers who had been recent national champions. He wasn't in awe of those teams and he shows no fear of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, or any other U.S. player, either.

"That's not what we're here for," he said. "We're here to compete. We're competitors, and I think that everybody on the team has that approach."

The Americans, who did not practice Wednesday, are approaching the Nigeria game as the next step in their quest for a second consecutive gold medal.

The contest is the second straight, and perhaps last, lesser opponent for the Americans. The schedule picks up again Saturday with a matchup against Lithuania before the final game of group play Monday against longtime rival Argentina.

The U.S. improved to 2-0 with Tuesday's rout of Tunisia, a team Nigeria beat by only four points in its opening game. The Americans led by just 13 points after a surprisingly close first half, then rang up 64 points in the second half to turn it into the easy victory that was expected.

"It's not easy to us," James said. "The final score may look that way, but we go out and we work hard, we work our habits and we try to get better, and I feel like we try to get better."

The Americans still have times where they struggle against a zone defense, settling for 3-pointers instead of attacking and using their athletic advantages, and got themselves out of position defensively a few times early in Tuesday's game. So there's plenty to work on.

They will do it Thursday against some familiar faces.

Besides the 6-foot-9 Diogu and Skinn, Nigeria also has forward Al-Farouq Aminu ? the No. 8 pick in the 2010 draft ? on its roster. Aminu was traded last year by the Los Angeles Clippers to New Orleans in the deal for the U.S. starting point guard Chris Paul.

As always, the Americans will try to use their swarming defensive pressure to force mistakes that lead to easy baskets. Nigeria will need much better offensive execution to stand a chance after recording a pathetic three assists and going 1 for 16 from 3-point range in its loss to Lithuania.

"They're the best players in the world, obviously. It's no secret, but we're competitors. I know I am, so doesn't really make a difference," Skinn said. "I'm going to go out there and play the best basketball I can. We obviously have to play smart. You can't make very many mistakes against a team like that, so we've got to cut down on our turnovers" and make some shots.

Wednesday's day off will probably be the last day of rest at the Olympics for the U.S. The Americans have dealt with a hectic schedule that took them across the United States and a couple of stops in Europe before arriving in London, and Krzyzewski has clearly been trying to give extra rest to Bryant, who will turn 34 this month and has played just 21 minutes in the tournament.

Nigeria is ready for the Americans' best. And after a chance to catch their breath, perhaps the U.S. players will bring it.

"We're going to have a day off but we're still going to be around each other," Carmelo Anthony said Tuesday. "We'll be in the hotel. We might go to some events tomorrow. We've been going since Vegas nonstop and put in a lot of work in. We definitely need that day."

Need more from IT? How to Support the Changing Role of Your IT Staff

We hear it over and over again.? CEOs and executive leaders want and need more from IT.? However, communicating what ?more? really means is critical to getting what your company needs to be successful and competitive in today?s market!

The IT professional is rapidly changing as IT evolves. The role of today?s IT leader demands more emphasis on strategic planning, supporting business goals and users, and managing vendors.? As many infrastructure needs are outsourced, the need for purely technical expertise is shifting to a model where business skills, such as budgeting, project management, and change management, are not only taking a more prominent role, but will continue to grow in importance as the paradigm continues to shift. What are you doing to support your IT professional, whose training and education may have been very technically focused, to develop their business skills and expertise?? Here are three suggestions that you can put into action today:

  1. Engage in a program of ?Quick Hits?:? By connecting IT with end users to solve process issues that are either no cost or low cost, and recognizing the benefits, you?ll encourage a shift in thinking from ?keeping the lights on? to impacting everyday business procedures.? At Hartman, we?ve seen these programs pay off significantly, resulting in ?improved customer service, increased production rates and user satisfaction.
  2. Identify specific areas in need of support:? Project Management, for example, is something that every IT leader is expected to handle, often to the tune of large investments in systems.? These projects require not only your financial investment, but also a significant time investment from your people.? Most IT leaders have had little or no direct training in project management techniques.? Help your IT Manager to contribute more effectively by connecting them to systems that they can tap into, rather than reinventing the wheel.?At Hartman, our own Dawn King ?leads a ?Project Management Boot Camp? series that quickly provides IT with the tools, templates and strategies needed to tackle any project.?
  3. Enroll your IT professional(s) in Hartman?s IT Leadership Workshop series:? Not only do we tackle a relevant business topic each month, we provide an interactive forum for IT professionals to work through case studies and apply key take-away tools and techniques to their organization.? In addition, these workshops provide a much needed peer-to-peer interaction and opportunity for discussion so that IT leaders can collaborate on best practices, lessons learned, and innovative approaches.? The workshops are included as part of our retained client service agreements, and are also available at a reasonable annual fee to organizations that are not current clients.? For more details, please contact Katie Runge at krunge@hartmanadvisors.com.

In summary, take the time to communicate your needs and expectations and provide a forum or roadmap for your IT professional to make it happen. Help your IT move beyond the operational day-to-day and leverage them to lead your company in developing a strategic outlook to move your business forward.

DOG AND CAT HEALTHCARE | Lincoln County View

Karen Miller

?

???? Do you know that you should visit your doctor at least yearly to have a physical exam? Well, the same applies to your pet. Dogs and cats should be examined at least yearly by their veterinarian. Pets age faster than we do and their lifespans are shorter than ours. For example, the larger breed a dog is, the shorter their lifespan. An 8 year old Great Dane is not the same age in human years as an 8 year old toy Poodle. As dogs and cats get older, they should be examined at least twice yearly because their health status can change rapidly.

During a physical exam, your veterinarian is checking your pet?s eyes, ears, teeth and gums, skin, joints, abdomen, external lymph nodes, and listening to their heart and lungs with a stethoscope. During your visit, your vet can administer the appropriate vaccines for your pet. Yes, vaccines are still needed by dogs and cats. These vaccines protect your pet from various contagious diseases that include distemper, parvovirus, kennel cough, leptospirosis, rabies, feline leukemia, feline rhinotracheitis, feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus, and feline chlamydiosis. Your veterinarian can explain what each of these diseases is.? Rabies vaccination is required by state law- even if your dog or cat is a ?totally inside pet?. These diseases are still out there. Did you know that some N.C. animal shelters have been temporarily closed within the last year due to outbreaks of parvo and distemper? Did you also know that there is a canine influenza virus and a vaccine for it? Your veterinarian is the best source of information about the healthcare of your pet. Vets are here to educate you and to help you take care of your pet. Feel free to ask your vets and their staff questions and voice concerns about your pet and be an active participant in the healthcare of your pet.

Heartworm disease is very common in our area and a yearly heartworm test should be part of your dog?s exam. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and are completely preventable with either monthly medication or, for dogs, a 6 month injectable medication. Did you know that cats can also get heartworms and there is prevention available for them too?

Your dog and cat should also be tested at least yearly for intestinal parasites. Heartworm preventions can also deworm for certain, but not all, intestinal parasites. Some of the intestinal parasites that dogs and cats can have are zoonotic, which means that people can get them too.

Flea and tick medications are important for your pet also. Fleas and ticks can both carry diseases, more than just Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. Some over the counter medicines work, some don?t and you don?t have your veterinarian to advise you with those. Some of those products can be toxic, especially to your cat. Your vet can advise you on your flea and tick options and what is the best medicine for your pet. Did you know there is now a pill available for dogs that is heartworm and flea medication in one?

Remember that your veterinarian is the best advocate for your pet?s healthcare and wants to help you take the best care of them possible. Don?t hesitate to call your vet with your questions or concerns. Together you can help your pet live a longer, healthier, and happier life.

Preparing Pets For A New Baby - Pregnancy - Families.com

by Sara Berthiaume | More from this Blogger

As you prepare for the arrival of your baby, it is important to make sure that others in your family are also prepared to welcome the new arrival. Pets are an important part of many families, and the arrival of a new baby is a big adjustment for them. In order to keep both the human and animal members of your household happy and safe, check out these tips for preparing your pet for a new baby.

It can be helpful to think of your dog or cat as an older child who, up until now, was your only child. If there are multiple pets, they will still need to be prepared even if they have already been through the experience of adding a new pet to the family. Newborn babies require a lot of attention, and your dog or cat is bound to feel at least a little bit slighted.

Of course, it can be tempting to lavish your dogs and cats with extra attention before the big day arrives. If you can avoid that temptation and instead focus on gradually getting your pets accustomed to spending less time with you, they will be more prepared to deal with the amount of attention that you give to your baby when he or she arrives. In conjunction with spending less time with your pets, it can be helpful if others in the household - your spouse or partner as well as any other children gradually begin spending more time with your pets.

Give your pets advance notice of what babies are like, if at all possible. Have friends with babies come over, and let your pets see the babies. Set up baby's room, and things like any swings and infant seats that you plan to use, so that your pets will not be startled by any music or movement that they make. Of course, you may have to train your pets to stay off of or out of these things, too, but now is a good time to get them used to those rules. Consider playing videos of crying babies to get your pets used to that sound because whether or not you want to admit it, your baby will cry sometimes.

Finally, when the baby is born, arrange to have a family member bring an outfit or a blanket that now has the baby's scent on it to your home for your pets to investigate. That way, they will recognize the baby's small when you come home from the hospital. With a little advance planning and preparation, you can help your pets to adjust to your new baby and keep everyone safe and happy.
