Space travel may be harmful to the brain, study suggests; Prolonged cosmic radiation exposure could hasten Alzheimer's

Dec. 31, 2012 ? As if space travel was not already filled with enough dangers, a new study out today in the journal PLOS ONE shows that cosmic radiation -- which would bombard astronauts on deep space missions to places like Mars -- could accelerate the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

"Galactic cosmic radiation poses a significant threat to future astronauts," said M. Kerry O'Banion, M.D., Ph.D., a professor in the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy and the senior author of the study. "The possibility that radiation exposure in space may give rise to health problems such as cancer has long been recognized. However, this study shows for the first time that exposure to radiation levels equivalent to a mission to Mars could produce cognitive problems and speed up changes in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer's disease."

While space is full of radiation, the earth's magnetic field generally protects the planet and people in low earth orbit from these particles. However, once astronauts leave orbit, they are exposed to constant shower of various radioactive particles. With appropriate warning, astronauts can be shielded from dangerous radiation associated with solar flares. But there are also other forms of cosmic radiation that, for all intents and purposes, cannot be effectively blocked.

Because this radiation exists in low levels, the longer an astronaut is in deep space, the greater the exposure. This is a concern for NASA as the agency is planning manned missions to a distant asteroid in 2021 and to Mars in 2035. The round trip to the red planet, in particular, could take as long as three years.

For over 25 years, NASA has been funding research to determine the potential health risks of space travel in an effort to both develop countermeasures and determine whether or not the risks warranted sending men and women on extended missions in deep space.

Since that time, several studies have demonstrated the potential cancer, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal impact of galactic cosmic radiation. The study out today for the first time examines the potential impact of space radiation on neurodegeneration, in particular, the biological processes in the brain that contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease. O'Banion -- whose research focuses on how radiation affects the central nervous system -- and his team have been working with NASA for over eight years.

The researchers studied the impact of a particular form of radiation called high-mass, high-charged (HZE) particles. These particles -- which are propelled through space at very high speeds by the force of exploding stars -- come in many different forms. For this study the researcher chose iron particles. Unlikely hydrogen protons, which are produced by solar flares, the mass of HZE particles like iron, combined with their speed, enable them to penetrate solid objects such as the wall and protective shielding of a spacecraft.

"Because iron particles pack a bigger wallop it is extremely difficult from an engineering perspective to effectively shield against them," said O'Banion. "One would have to essentially wrap a spacecraft in a six-foot block of lead or concrete."

A portion of the research was conducted at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island. NASA located its research operation at Brookhaven to take advantage of the Lab's particle accelerators which -- by colliding matter together at very high speeds -- can reproduce the radioactive particles found in space.

The researchers specifically wanted to examine whether or not radiation exposure had the potential to accelerate the biological and cognitive indicators of Alzheimer's disease, particularly in individuals who may be predisposed to developing the disease. To accomplish this they chose study the impact on animal models of Alzheimer's disease. These particular models have been extensively studied and scientists understand the precise timeframe in which the disease progresses over time.

At Brookhaven, the animals were exposed to various doses of radiation, including levels comparable to what astronauts would be experience during a mission to Mars. Back in Rochester, a team of researchers -- including URMC graduate student Jonathan Cherry, who was first author on the paper -- evaluated the cognitive and biological impact of the exposure. The mice underwent a series of experiments during which they had to recall objects or specific locations. The researchers observed that mice exposed to radiation were far more likely to fail these tasks -- suggesting neurological impairment -- earlier than these symptoms would typically appear.

The brains of the mice also showed signs of vascular alterations and a greater than normal accumulation of beta amyloid, the protein "plaque" that accumulates in the brain and is one of the hallmarks of the disease.

"These findings clearly suggest that exposure to radiation in space has the potential to accelerate the development of Alzheimer's disease," said O'Banion. "This is yet another factor that NASA, which is clearly concerned about the health risks to its astronauts, will need to take into account as it plans future missions."

Additional co-authors include Jacqueline Williams, Ph.D. and John Olschowka, Ph.D. with URMC and Bin Liu, Ph.D., Jeffrey Frost, and Cynthia Lemere, Ph.D. with Harvard Medical School. The study was funded by NASA.

GOP Drops Social Security Cut Demand In Fiscal Cliff Negotiations

Brian Beutler

Just hours after GOP efforts to include a Social Security benefit cut in a last minute deal to avoid the fiscal cliff ground negotiations to a halt, Republicans backtracked. ?

After a Republican conference meeting in the Capitol on Sunday evening, numerous senators emerged to announce that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would retract his request to include the so-called "chained CPI" measure in any short-term budget deal.?

RG3 leads Redskins into playoffs

Running back gains 200 yards and scores 3 TDs to beat Dallas for NFC East title

updated 11:28 p.m. ET Dec. 30, 2012

LANDOVER, Md. - Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris needed only four months to put the Washington Redskins in a place they haven't been this millennium - on top of the NFC East.

Led by a pair of rookies serenaded loudly and lovingly as "R-G-3!" and "Al-fred Mor-ris!," the Redskins claimed their first division title since 1999, beating the archrival Dallas Cowboys 28-18 Sunday night in a winner-take-all finale to end the NFL's regular season.

Griffin, the Heisman Trophy winner drafted second overall, ran for 63 yards and a touchdown. Morris, the out-of-nowhere sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic, ran for 200 yards and three scores. He set the franchise single-season rushing record for the Redskins (10-6), who revived the season behind their quarterback's talent and leadership to win seven straight after their bye week. They are the first NFL team to rally from 3-6 and make the playoffs since the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1996.

"I could never imagine coming in here my rookie year and doing what I've been able to do," Morris said. "It's better than my wildest dreams."

After the final whistle, team captain Griffin walked off the field with a big smile, holding up his left index finger in a No. 1 gesture. He then held his left fist aloft.

"These aren't ordinary rookies," cornerback DeAngelo Hall said. "For a guy to win the Heisman Trophy, be the top pick, the savior of the franchise, come in here so humble - from Day 1 he came in here working, that's why he has that `C' on his chest."

Washington will host Seattle next Sunday, the Redskins' third consecutive playoff game against the Seahawks. They lost at Seattle in 2005 and 2007.

"I've been here for the 4-12, the bad times, almost being the joke of the NFL," said defensive lineman Kedric Golston, one of the team's longest-tenured players. "But to do this with this group of guys - the old and the new - it's good to be here."

The Cowboys (8-8), meanwhile, will miss the playoffs for the third straight season, having stumbled in a make-or-break end-of-regular-season game for the third time in five years.

Tony Romo threw three interceptions - matching his total from the last eight games combined. A poor throw was picked by Rob Jackson when the Cowboys had a chance to drive for a winning score in the final minutes.

Romo almost became the first Dallas quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards in a season, but his career is instead further tainted by post-Christmas disappointments. He also had Week 17 losses to the Philadelphia Eagles (44-6) in 2008 and the New York Giants (31-14) last year, as well as his 1-3 record in playoff games.

Morris finished with 1,613 yards, topping Clinton Portis' 1,516 in 2005. He was especially dominant in the Redskins' go-ahead drive in the third quarter, when six plays were runs by Morris and the other three involved fake handoffs to him. The touchdown came when Griffin faked to Morris - one of several times linebacker DeMarcus Ware was totally fooled by deception in the backfield - and ran 10 yards around the left end. It put Washington ahead 14-7 in the third quarter.

The Cowboys answered with a field goal early in the fourth, but Morris' 32-yard scamper gave the Redskins a 21-10 cushion with 10:32 to play.

Trying to play catch-up, Dallas pulled within three on a 10-yard pass to Kevin Ogletree and a 2-point conversion with 5:50 to play. But Morris' third touchdown, a 1-yard run with 1:09 left, sealed the win.

Playing against a defense missing its five best run defenders, the Redskins didn't need Griffin to throw much. He completed just 9 of 18 passes for 100 yards.

The Redskins were calling designed runs for Griffin as a regular part of the game plan for the first time since he sprained his right knee four weeks ago. He lacked the explosiveness he showed earlier in the season, perhaps hampered by his big brace, but he was still a running threat.

Romo completed 20 of 31 passes for 218 yards.

The Cowboys also dealt with in-game injuries to receivers Miles Austin (left ankle) and Dez Bryant (back). Bryant, who had a torrid second half of the season despite breaking his left index finger, had four catches for 71 yards.

The Redskins also set a franchise record for fewest turnovers in a season with 14, fewer even than the 1982 team that played only nine regular-season games because of a players strike.

Washington's slow start this season prompted coach Mike Shanahan to dismiss playoff hopes and declare the remaining seven games would determine which players would be on his team "for years to come."

Griffin and his teammates had other plans, and the coach quickly changed his tune. Now the Redskins are in the postseason for the first time since a wild-card berth under Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs in 2007.

"All odds were against us," Morris said. "But we believed in each other."

Notebook: Louisville expects big things from Florida transfers

Published: Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 11:00 p.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, December 30, 2012 at 12:05 a.m.

?Both those kids will be great players,? Watson said.

Clark, a wide receiver, and Christian, a tight end, were high school teammates with Florida All-America safety Matt Elam. Clark and Christian made the decision last season to transfer and are sitting out this season per NCAA transfer rules.

Watson said he has kept the two involved in the offense this season in practice because they will be major contributors in 2013.

?We've actually kept both of those guys in a portion of our practice so that we keep them developed and have them ready in a year,? Watson said. ?Robert is going to play an inside slot for us,? Watson said. ?He's got explosive speed and is a sure-handed catcher and he's a tough guy, too. I love what I see of him.

?Gerald is going to be a great tight end. Gerald is a heck of a football player. And Robert is, too. They have football in their blood, and they play at a high level.?

Both cited a lack of playing time as their main reason for deciding to leave Florida and transfer to Louisville. Clark and Christian were part of Urban Meyer's final recruiting class at UF.

Elam said he remains close friends with Clark and Christian and that he even made a trip to Louisville early in the summer to spend some time with them.

?I communicate with them every day,? Elam said. ?We have a good friendship. It was tough coming in with them and seeing them leave, but it's something you deal with.?

Recruiting force in Florida

Christian and Clark have plenty of Florida company at Louisville. The Cardinals have 34 players on their roster from Florida, and the state is a recruiting priority for former UF defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and his staff.

?It's been huge for us,? Watson said. ?Charlie, obviously with his background, and a number of our assistant coaches are from and have experience in Florida recruiting. There are a lot of strong ties with our staff to the high school coaches and the community of coaches down there.

?So, it's been huge for us. We have 34 players from Florida. Those kids are the kids that have turned around our program.?

Floyd, Elam mum

Although many consider it a given that junior defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd will announce for the NFL Draft sometime after Wednesday's game, he said Saturday he still hasn't made up his mind what he's going to do.

?No, I haven't made a decision,? he said. ?I haven't sat down with my coaches and talked about that yet. Right now, we're just focusing on Louisville. I haven't talked to anybody about the NFL.

?I'm just getting ready for this game. On Jan. 3, we'll talk about it. I'm not locked into anything yet.?

Elam, who also is strongly considering declaring for the draft, would not comment.

?I'm not saying anything about that,? he said.

Elam, however, did say he will rely on input from his brother, NFL safety Abe Elam, before making his decision.

?I talk to Abe every day. He gives me advice every day,? Elam said. ?I'm blessed to have him. He's helped me out with a lot of things. I feel I couldn't do it without him.?

Elam comes full circle

The last time the Gators played in the Sugar Bowl three years ago, Elam was a high school star in limbo. After Urban Meyer resigned (for a day), Elam backed out of his UF commitment and pledged to FSU. Not long after Meyer announced he would be returning after a leave of absence, Elam came back to UF and signed with the Gators in February.

Looking back, Elam said everything has worked out fine.

?I'm satisfied,? he said. ?I'm with the guys I wanted to be with, the guys I came in with. I enjoyed my time. I feel like the adverse situations helped me grow, just dealing with tough situations.?

Watch out for this Gator

When Elam was asked if there were any young defensive players who had a chance to be future stars, the first player he mentioned was true freshman cornerback Brian Poole, who has played on special teams this season.

?He's doing a lot of things this year. He's shown some great things,? Elam said. ?He can play any position in the secondary. I feel like he'll get a chance and take advantage of it and make the coaches play him.?

Elam also mentioned true sophomore cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy.

?He's going to be great,? Elam said.

Decision a statement

Tennessee was stunned when Strong turned down the offer to become the Vols new head coach, but the Louisville players were not surprised at all by Strong's decision to stay, senior center Mario Benavides said.

?With the way he spoke to us about it, we never really had any doubt,? Benavides said. ?But it is a business; we did understand that.

?Him making the decision to stay, I think kind of changed how we look at the program. We're positive he wants to build and stay here (long term). His girls are in high school in Louisville and love it. His wife loves it. We're definitely confident about him staying and making this program his own and creating a new tradition at Louisville.?

Big East or Big Least?

It sounds like the Louisville players want to turn Wednesday's Sugar Bowl game into a Big East vs. SEC battle for conference pride.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who is from Miami and grew up a Gator fan, said he's confident Louisville would have the same success it's had this season if the Cardinals were in the SEC.

?No doubt,? Bridgewater said.

Bridgewater said Wednesday's game will give the Cardinals a chance to prove the point.

?It's a statement game,? he said. ?We've been considered the Big Least. The Big East gets no respect. This is a chance to earn it.?

Corporation or LLC, which is right

?

Many people wonder whether they should have a limited liability company or a corporation for their business. In order to find out which one is right for your 499032_f260business you will need to take a look at the various advantages and disadvantages of each type of business structure and then make your choice.

Here are the main advantages you will get if you decide to incorporate your business:

  1. Limited Liability ? this is a probably the best advantage that you will get if you incorporate your business. In most business structures the owner assumes all of the liability of the company, but when a business becomes incorporated the amount of your liability is limited to the amount of money that you have actually invested in the company. For example if you are a sole business owner then your car or house can actually be seized to pay any debts that your business might owe. But in a corporation the only way that you can be held responsible is if you have given a personal guarantee.
  2. Corporations Carry On - basically a corporation has an unlimited life span where as other business structures will cease to exist in certain scenarios. What this boils down to is that a corporation will continue to exist if the ownership of the business changes, if the shareholders die or leave the business, it doesn?t ever go away.
  3. Raising Money Is Easier - it is a known fact that corporations actually have an easier time raising money and because of this you will have an easier time growing and developing your business. The reason that they have an easier time is that corporations can actually not only borrow and incur debt but they can also sell shares and raise equity capital. This is a huge advantage because equity capital for the most part does not have to be repaid and it incurs no interest. But when you are issuing shares you are also reducing your percentage of ownership in the business.
  4. Income Control ? if you are a corporation you can be the one to determine when you personally receive income, which is a huge tax advantage. Basically what this does is that instead of getting your income when it is received it allows you to take your income at a time when you?ll pay less tax.
  5. Potential Tax Deferral ? this is not a guaranteed thing, but more like an opportunity when it arises. But this works because you can defer paying some tax until a later time so this may make you be able to realize a tax savings because it might put you into a lower tax bracket or you might be able to put it off until tax rates have fallen. This depends on what happens when taxes actually come due.
  6. Income Splitting ? this works because corporations pay dividends to their shareholders from the company?s earnings. So this allows you to split the income how you see fit. This can work because a shareholder does not have to be actively involved in the business to receive dividends. So you can spilt the income with people in your family so that not all of it is getting taxed at the higher tax rate, basically you will be redistributing income from a higher tax bracket to a lower tax bracket
  7. The Small Business Tax Deduction ? if you have a small business and you decide to make it a corporation you might qualify for the small business deduction. This is an annual tax credit that is calculated at the rate of 16% on the first $200,000 of taxable income. This can actually be a much lower tax bracket than that applied to your personal income.
  8. Increased Business ? this isn?t always a guarantee but for the most part people tend to perceive corporations as being more stable than other business, it just has something to do with the name. Not to mention that in some cases, such as contractors, some companies will only do business with you if you are a corporation because of liability issues.

Here are the disadvantages of having your business as a corporation:

  1. Registering a corporation is expensive ? they are very costly to set up. The reason for that is because they are a more complex legal structure than 499030_f260other business structures so creating one is going to be more complicated which requires more costs. These fees can range in the hundreds for small businesses, for the set up alone. And these set up fees can be higher for large businesses.
  2. Liability May Not Be As Limited As You Think ? most people think that they are protected from everything if they have a corporation, but this can be undercut by personal guarantees or even credit agreements. This becomes an issue if others won?t give the corporation credit. This usually happens because the corporation is new so they have limited assets which mean they don?t have enough to secure a loan so the banks and other lenders require guarantees from the owners. What this means is that if you default in repayment obligation on those you can be held liable, meaning lose your car or house.
  3. Less Tax Flexibility ? this area affects business losses. If you own the business on yoru own or with somebody else and your business suffers a loss you can use those losses to actually lower other types of personal income in the year that the losses occurred. But in a corporation if you have a loss they can only be carried forward or back to reduce the corporation?s income from other years.
  4. No Personal Tax Credits ? this can actually be a tax disadvantage for your business because the corporation isn?t eligible for personal tax credits. So in other words every dollar that the corporation earns is taxed. Sole owners and partnerships can claim tax credits that corporations cannot.
  5. Increased paperwork ? with a corporation there is a lot more paperwork involved just to maintain the corporation. An example of this is that corporations are required to maintain a minute book, and in this book you have to have the corporate bylaws and minutes from all corporate meetings. But you also have to keep all of the corporate documents up to date at all times, which means you are going to be facing a ton of paperwork.499035_f260
  6. Another Tax Return - if you decide to have a corporation you are going to have to file two tax retruns each year, one for your individual income and one for the corporation. This means that you are going to end up paying more for your accounting fees. But you are also going to be paying double taxes, because you have to pay personal income tax on the profits that you received plus all of the money made by the corporation is taxed before you receive your share.

Here are the main advantages of having a limited liability company:

  1. Limited Liability ? this is similar to a corporation because you have the same protections as the corporation when it comes to being responsible for the business debts. Basically a LLC exists as a separate entity so the members can?t be held responsible unless they have signed a personal guarantee.
  2. Flexible Profit Distribution ? this allows you to select varying forms of distribution of profits. A partnership requires you to split the profits fifty-fifty, but with the LLC you can do that or choose from another method, however you see fit.
  3. No Minutes ? corporations are required to keep formal minutes, have meetings, and record resolutions. But the LLC business structure does not require you to do any of these things, which in the long run actually makes it easier to operate.
  4. Flow Through Taxation ? all of your business losses, profits, and expenses are going to flow through the company to the individual members. So in this type of business you are going to avoid the double taxation of paying corporate tax and individual tax. In most cases this is considered to be a tax advantage but in some cases a business can benefit from having a corporate tax structure.

Here are the disadvantages to having a limited liability company:

  1. Limited Life ? unlike a corporation a limited liability company will not last forever. In fact these will be dissolved when one member, just one, dies or 499033_f260declares bankruptcy, regardless of how the other members are doing financially or if they want to stay in business. If they want to continue they must redefine their business as a limited liability.
  2. Going Public ? if you have any thoughts about taking yoru business public or issuing shares to your employees in the future you are better off going corporate from the beginning because of the complications of switching later on in the business? life.
  3. Added Complexity ? if you are running a sole proprietorship or even a partnership you are going to have an easier time because they are easy to run and do not require much paperwork. But when it comes to a LLC things get quite a bit more complicated. The reason for this is that a LLC can be federally classified as sole proprietorship, partnership or a corporation for tax purposes, which makes things all that more complicated because you have to learn the appropriate tax rules that apply.

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, triggers monolithic memories

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, still won't be stealthy

Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there's signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that's potentially very striking -- and more than a little reminiscent of 2001's species-changing monoliths. There's no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn't be surprised knowing the company's history and the Note II's strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don't expect any Starchildren as a result.

"The World Is a Book and Those Who Do Not Travel Read Only One Page"

"The World Is a Book and Those Who Do Not Travel Read Only One Page"This inspirational quote about travel is attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo. If for some reason you're delaying on acting on your wanderlust or have been reluctant to travel, remember that travel can be one of the most life-changing experiences of your life.

"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page" emphasizes that if you never go anywhere, you'll have a very limited view of the world.

Not all of us can travel the whole globe, but just making travel a priority?even to a new place a day's drive away?can be eye-opening. Mark Twain is quoted as saying in The Innocents Abroad/Roughing It:

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Maybe 2013 will be a great year to put your travel dreams in motion?

LG adding more games to its Cinema 3D Smart TVs in 2013

LG

You may wince at the idea of your TV supplanting your games console, but LG's seen enough potential in the idea to swell the number of titles available for its Cinema 3D units. 93% The Sessions

All Critics (151) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (141) | Rotten (10)

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

This is one of the best, and certainly one of the best-acted, films of the year. I can't think of another film that mixed compassion and carnality in such an eloquent way.

The laughs are always gentle, which is descriptive of the film as a whole, as it strives to reconnect cinematic sex with shared humanity.

Vera is something of a missed opportunity here.

A movie about sex that shows a whole lot of sex, but isn't sex-obsessed. The Sessions grabs you in the heart rather than the loins.

An inspiring tale that celebrates the human spirit, underscores the value of connections, and laughs at the beautifully embarrassing urges that make us what we are.

Deeply moving. The Oscar-worthy (John) Hawkes invests his character with a sense of grace and humor that nullifies any potential pity. This is a great movie for adults and even for older adolescents.

It is rare to watch a movie where sex is treated with maturity, religion is treated with respect and characters are so heart-warmingly written and portrayed.

Raw, unrestrained and sympathetic without giving in to melodrama, 'The Sessions' is about a man facing a physical challenge who decides he wants to become intimate with a woman.

An intelligent, funny, insightful film that offers a frank examination of sex. It's not prurient or titillating, just truthful.

A remarkable actor, John Hawkes, gives a remarkable performance as a remarkable character.

Surprisingly funny and touching.

Presents the sensitive O'Brien as a brave, funny, unselfish and unlikely romantic-fantasy dream hero for disappointed, weary or jaded older female moviegoers.

The uplifting struggle for living a life of dignity for paralyzed from the neck down polio victim Mark O'Brien.

The sex scenes are frank and explicit, but never cheap and exploitative. (Yes, they get naked. Grow up.) The nudity isn't airbrushed pin-up perfection, but raw and real - and all the more lovely and moving because of it.

Taking the good with the bad, this isn't a terrible movie, though it is being rather overhyped. I found myself laughing a lot and enjoying the transformations the actors go through, but an unengaging story only serves to drag it down.

A film, inspired by the life of the late poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, that celebrates the relationship between physical and emotional intimacy.

Not just another weepy drama of overcoming odds, a My Left Foot with a different appendage. The Sessions is often brazenly funny, not from shocking dialogue but characters reacting the way people do, especially with such a flustering subject as sex.

an unusually frank and frequently humorous meditation on the transformative power of connection

Take away the nudity and the frank sex talk and you'd pretty much be left with a high-minded TV movie -- with unusually good actors.

Euribor seesaws as policymakers dispel rate cut hopes

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Key Euribor bank-to-bank lending rates eased on Thursday, having risen in the previous session as earlier comments from a clutch of European Central Bank policymakers played down chances of another ECB rate cut.

Joerg Asmussen, a member of the ECB's Executive Board, said last week he would be "very reluctant" about the ECB cutting its deposit rate - now at zero - any further, adding that "our (monetary) policy is very accommodative".

Another board member, Yves Mersch, said he did not see the logic of a debate about the ECB cutting its main rate from a record low of 0.75 percent. A third board member, Peter Praet, said earlier this month there is little room to cut.

The ECB kept rates on hold this month despite new forecasts suggesting the euro area economy will contract next year as it has this.

On Thursday, three-month Euribor rates, traditionally the main gauge of unsecured bank-to-bank lending, ticked down to 0.185 percent from 0.186 percent.

The six-month rate was unchanged at 0.319 percent while the one-week rate eased to 0.089 percent from 0.090 percent.

Dollar-priced bank-to-bank Euribor lending rates were mixed, with three-month rates falling to 0.57462 percent from 0.57667 percent and one-week rates rising to 0.63692 percent from 0.58167 percent.

Police union seeks more help for Newtown officers

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Some of the police officers who responded to the school shooting in Newtown are so traumatized they haven't been working, but they have to use sick time and could soon be at risk of going without a paycheck, a union official said Wednesday.

The union, Council 15 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is seeking more generous assistance in talks with the town's insurer. It is also reaching out to lawmakers and the governor's office with proposals to modify state law and expand workers' compensation benefits for officers who witness horrific crime scenes.

"The insurer for the town has taken a position that these officers are entitled to only what the statute allows. Unfortunately for these officers, the statute doesn't allow any benefits," said Eric Brown, an attorney for the union, which represents nearly 4,000 officers around Connecticut.

A gunman shot his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 and slaughtered 20 first-graders and six educators. The gunman, who had also killed his mother that morning, committed suicide as police arrived.

Brown said that the number of officers "critically affected" by the tragedy is below 15 and that a small number of them are not currently working.

A spokesman for Newtown police, Lt. George Sinko, said the officers are generally holding up well.

"A couple of them are taking it harder than some of the other ones," he said. "The things that the officers had to experience underscores the need to support them in every way possible."

Officials with the town's insurer, the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Authorities say the victims were shot with a high-powered, military-style rifle loaded with ammunition designed to inflict maximum damage. All the victims had been shot at least twice, the medical examiner said, and as many as 11 times. Two victims were pronounced dead at a hospital, while all others died in the school.

In the past, advocates have pushed to change the statutes on workers' compensation, which currently include provisions for officers who suffer mental impairment as the result of using or being subjected to deadly force ? but not for those who witness crime scenes with mass casualties.

Concerns about the potential cost to cities and towns have been an obstacle, but the issue is likely to resurface in the next legislation session, said state Rep. Stephen Dargan, a West Haven Democrat who is co-chairman of the legislature's public safety committee.

"We don't want it to be used in an abusive way, but the circumstances are so horrific in Newtown. We need to protect those first responders and give them all the help we can give them," he said.

Firefighters who responded to the scene at Sandy Hook also have described struggling with feelings of frustration and anguish, but said they were grateful they were spared from witnessing the scene that greeted police inside the school.

Brown said outside agencies have been meeting demands for counseling services, but it will be important to ensure support is in place over the long term. The officers who are not working also could use up available sick time by early January, he said.

"The emotional loads they're carrying far exceed anything they could imagine," Brown said.

Police have yet to offer a possible motive for gunman Adam Lanza's rampage.

Expansive memorials throughout the small New England town have become gathering points for residents and visitors alike. A steady stream of well-wishers have taken pictures, dropped off toys and fought back tears at a huge sidewalk memorial in the center of Newtown's Sandy Hook section that is filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

Newtown officials plan to convert into a memorial the countless mementos paying tribute to the schoolhouse victims. Thousands of flowers, letters, signs, photos, candles, teddy bears and other items at sites around town will be turned into soil and blocks to be used in a memorial, The News Times in nearby Danbury reported.

Christmas shopping: A pink kitchen set and the 'buying local' dilemma

I wasted hours looking for a cheaper version online, when my dad was willing to pay more at the local store. He made me realize that I was all about 'buying local' until I had to shell out more money. I've learned:?I can?t always pay more, but I don?t always have to pay less.

He was trying to buy a Christmas present for my three-year-old at a store in Decatur, Ill. where I grew up, but I had found a less expensive toy kitchen online. I shouldn?t have gotten involved, but in my constant pursuit of a better deal, and my inherent cheapness, I didn?t want him to pay too much. Now in addition to squashing his enthusiasm and Christmas spirit, I seemed to be stomping on my father?s moral code.

Every holiday season, he sends me a check to pick out gifts for my children, except last year. During our Thanksgiving visit to Illinois, Dad got such a kick out of watching his granddaughter pretend to cook he decided she needed her own mini range and refrigerator.

On his lunch hour from the firm where he has worked since the day he graduated from law school, Dad went to Haines & Essick. The small stationary and gift store has been a Decatur institution since 1902. Today, it is one of the few stores left downtown, which sadly has more parking spaces than places to shop.

Before we were even back home in Maine, Dad had e-mailed me a picture of a kitchen the store could ship just in time for Christmas. My 70-year-old father had never sent me anything online so his behavior was noteworthy. We do e-mail, but it?s a process that involves his secretary, Ginger, printing out my messages for him to read, and then my Dad dictaphones his response for Ginger to type up and e-mail back to me.

The kitchen in the picture was fabulous. It had a wooden oven and a microwave, plenty of refrigerator space for fake food and even a drink dispenser ? but the price tag quite literally took my breath away. For a moment, I thought if my father was willing to fork over $300 for a toy maybe I could talk him into remodeling my actual kitchen.

I spent the morning online pricing other toy kitchens, until I located a pink retro model from the same company for a third of the price.

My e-mail with the lower-priced model presented my Dad with a quandary: Mrs. Miller in the Haines & Essick?s toy department had spent a lot of time helping him select the kitchen set; it didn?t seem right for him to go buy it cheaper somewhere else.

By the time he got me on the phone, Dad had been to Haines & Essick four times and was having Ginger hold all his calls while he figured out how to fairly procure his granddaughter?s present. Mrs. Miller could order the pink kitchen I found online, but not at the same price. After discussing numerous scenarios, she conceded that my Dad should take the better deal online. During his third visit, Dad tried to pay Mrs. Miller some arbitrary finder?s fee, handing her a hundred dollar bill that she refused to take.

In the end, my father bought the pink kitchen from Haines & Essick even though it cost him more.

I?ve always thrown around the term ?buying local,? and thought I walked the walk: I frequent farm stands and independent bookstores. After college, during my self-righteous phase when I came back home and threw around all the new jargon I learned, I no doubt lectured my father on the importance of ?buying local? and eating ?locally-sourced food? ? things he had done all his life without affixing a fancy term to it.

My father made me realize that I was all about ?buying local? until I had to shell out more money. Granted I do not have a lot of extra cash, which influences my decisionmaking, but I also waste a lot of time trying to get a perceived deal. I spent four hours looking for a cheaper kitchen, time that I could have been working, and billing, for a grant I was supposed to be writing. It wasn?t even my money. Why was I so determined to get the best deal?

For my father, whose hero is Abraham Lincoln, buying the cheap kitchen online was a kind of dishonesty.

Haines & Essick is his store ? the store down the street from his office where people know his name. It?s the store where he has bought Christmas gifts for my brother and me?for 40 years. During my visit home, I was glad to see that it was still there. But I had to admit, if people like me continue to buy everything online or at chain stores, it might not be there in the future. And I know through my work as a grant writer, that it?s the local merchants who sponsor the Little League teams, Meals on Wheels, and other important community programs ? not the big box stores. Local merchants may have to charge more, but they also give back to their communities.

I realize, I can?t always pay more, but I don?t always have to pay less. I like to think I buy local. My dad actually does.

Mexico bishop inspires, infuriates with activism

MONCLOVA, Mexico (AP) ? The white-haired bishop stepped before some 7,000 faithful gathered in a baseball stadium in this violence-plagued northern border state. He led the gathering through the rituals of his Mass, reciting prayers echoed back by the massive crowd. And then his voice rose.

Politicians are tied to organized crime, Bishop Raul Vera bellowed while inaugurating the church's Year of Faith. Lawmakers' attempts to curb money laundering are intentionally weak. New labor reforms are a way to enslave Mexican workers.

How, Vera asked, can Mexicans follow leaders "who are the ones who have let organized crime grow, who have let criminals do what they do unpunished, because there's no justice in this country!"

In a nation where some clergy have been cowed into silence by drug cartels and official power, Vera is clearly unafraid to speak. That makes him an important voice of dissent in a country where the Roman Catholic Church often works hand-in-hand with the powerful, and where cynicism about politics is widespread and corrosive.

Vera's realm is a wide swath of Coahuila, a state bordering Texas that's become a hideout for the brutal Zetas drug cartel. It's where the current governor's nephew was killed in October and the former governor, the victim's father, resigned last year as leader of the political party that just returned to power with newly inaugurated President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Marked by his unvarnished speech, the Saltillo bishop's voice carries beyond his diocese here, especially when he weighs in on hot issues such as drug violence, vulnerable immigrants and gay rights.

In late 2007, Mexico City's Human Rights Commission denounced death threats against Vera and a burglary of the diocese's human rights offices. The following year, after Coahuila became the first Mexican state to allow civil unions for gay couples, a move the bishop endorsed, Vera was invited to speak at a U.S.-based conference for a Catholic gay and lesbian organization. In 2010, he was awarded a human rights prize in Norway.

Anonymous critics have hung banners outside the cathedral asking for what they called a real Catholic bishop. And last year, the 67-year-old was summoned to the Vatican to explain a church outreach program to gay youth.

Natalia Ni?o, president of Familias Mundi in Saltillo, told the Catholic News Agency last year that Vera had placed too much focus on supporting the gay community.

"A pastoral commitment to homosexual persons is necessary and welcomed, but not at the expense of the family and a solid pastoral plan for marriage and family, which is unfortunately being neglected in the diocese," she said.

Vera, who has had government bodyguards before, said he was foregoing similar security despite the criticism and threats. Such measures were rare and frowned upon in Saltillo, he said.

"I'm not the only one exposed, there are lots of people exposed who work with immigrants, with the missing," Vera said. "How do I cover myself? Them?"

Mexico's Bishops Conference did not respond to repeated requests for an interview about Vera. The church's hierarchy in Mexico did issue a statement in 2010 congratulating Vera on his human rights prize, and last year, the church condemned anonymous threats against him.

Vera's office often lends more weight to his words, especially when he speaks up about human rights, said Emiliano Ruiz Parra, a Mexican journalist and author of a new book that portrays Vera and other "black sheep" of the church in Mexico.

"Among the defenders of human rights he is the one who hedges the least, he says things the way they are," Parra said before Pena Nieto's Dec. 1 inauguration. "He's not afraid, for example, to take on the president, the one who's leaving or the president-elect."

Vera's homily on an October Sunday in Monclova included a lengthy diatribe about an alleged vote-buying scheme involving grocery store gift cards critics say were distributed by the Institutional Revolutionary Party, known as the PRI. Citing press reports, the bishop told the crowd organized crime paid for the scheme and helped Pe?a Nieto's victory. He also labeled as "collaborators" anyone who took a gift card in exchange for their vote.

"What we're seeing now is nothing other than the reaccommodation of the criminal groups with the new government teams," Vera said later as he raced back to Saltillo for another Mass. "The criminal groups always have their agreements with those who are in the state governments, in the federal government."

An industrial hub on the high desert about an hour west of Monterrey, Saltillo had long been known as a quiet haven in Mexico, distinguished by its auto manufacturing and a modern museum exhaustively detailing the surrounding terrain.

In recent years, however, the area has fallen victim to the drug violence plaguing other parts of Mexico. In 2011, 729 murders hit the state, compared to 449 the year before and 107 in 2006, according to preliminary figures released by the government this summer. Four bodies were found hanging from a Saltillo overpass earlier this month.

Until the nephew of Gov. Ruben Moreira was killed in early October, the political class had showed little concern for violence, Vera said.

"Fear of the conditions that Mexico is going through with the insecurity, with so much violence, makes us silent, and Don Raul is a strong voice who says what the rest of us are too scared to say," said Maria Luz Lopez Morales, a Vera friend and self-professed atheist who runs literacy programs for women in rural areas outside Monclova.

Vera arrived in Saltillo in 2000, after serving as the co-bishop in a deeply divided diocese in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, where Zapatista rebels were battling government troops. He came with a reputation as a social crusader.

"Ever since I arrived here, as I came from Chiapas and I wasn't a person who was going to support the government, since this moment they decided that my image needed to be restrained," Vera said. He pointed to critical coverage from a local television network where a host once displayed Vera's picture surrounded by flames of eternal damnation. Vera said he believed the host was paid to do the government's bidding.

In February 2006, Vera celebrated Mass at the Pasta de Conchos coal mine where 65 miners had perished and spent days with their families hammering the mine's owners, government officials and union leaders for dangerous working conditions.

Five months later, he traveled to Castanos, a small town near Monclova, where soldiers had been arrested in connection to the sexual assaults of more than a dozen prostitutes. He and his longtime collaborator Jackie Campbell started their own investigation, leading the diocese's human rights office to successfully push to try some of the soldiers in civilian courts, where several were sentenced.

Mysterious cars followed Vera and Campbell during that time. Campbell's home phone line was cut and Vera was threatened. Campbell eventually moved to Argentina for three years to escape the harassment and to pursue graduate studies.

Vera has also demanded investigations into the thousands of migrants who have gone missing while passing through the state and clamored for a DNA database to identify bodies. In an email, the Rev. Pedro Pantoja, who oversees the diocese's migrant programs, said he's enjoyed total support from Vera and called his commitment to social causes "prophetic."

What's drawn perhaps the most controversy has been Vera's stand on gay rights, which even called Rome's attention. In 2001, the Rev. Robert Coogan, an American priest in Saltillo ordained by Vera, suggested starting an outreach program to gay youth, after a teenager came to him when his parents threw him out of the house. Vera lent his support to the program, called Comunidad San Elredo, and later escaped reprimand when called to the Vatican to explain it.

"It flows out of his conviction: The church is for everyone," Coogan said.

Parishioner Julia Castillo, of Saltillo, said Vera wasn't just making headlines with his bold stands. He was also inspiring Mexicans at a time when many are feeling besieged.

"He talks about all of the injustice there is right now, of all the danger there is, that we have to stick together to fight against the corruption, above all in the government and the police," Castillo said. "We like the way he is."
