Halls were decked with boughs of holly and hot cinnamon cider was brewing for visitors, yesterday, at three Montclair historic homes during Essex County?s 4th Annual Holiday House Tour.

The Walther House, an 1865 Second Empire home, on the grounds of the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens was decorated with nature?s bounty. The gardens, established in 1927 and tended by curator Barbara Walther for more than five decades, and are now maintained by a volunteer society, the Essex County Presby Memorial Citizens Committee.

The Charles S. Shultz House at 30 North Mountain Avenue was built in 1896. It is a three-story Victorian residence with 21 rooms. The house remained in the Shultz family for three generations until it was donated to the Montclair Historical Society in 1997. The house is in a virtually untouched state of preservation. The living, dining and sitting rooms feature the family?s original Christmas decorations including a rotating holiday tree with toys and gifts from the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

The Israel Crane House located at 110 Orange Road was built in 1796 and was home to three generations of the Crane family. Early 18th and 19th century period rooms were decorated for the tour by the Montclair Garden Club. Visitors were served tastings of ginger cakes, baked ham and pounded cheese spread prepared on site by a knowledgeable docent willing to share her recipes.

The tours continue today and also include these Essex County Historic Homes: Kip?s Castle, Verona; Ballantine House, Newark; Grover Cleveland Birthplace, Caldwell; and Glenmont at Thomas Edison National Park, West Orange.
