Landscaper Gives Yard Makeover to Cancer Patient

A Houston County family plans to enjoy their new backyard Friday night, with a cook-out including hot dogs and s'mores.

Cutting Edge Landscaping out of Bolingbroke donated a full back yard makeover to a 10-year-old cancer patient and his family.

The work that started two weeks ago is almost complete. The Medical Center of Central Georgia connected the landscaping company with the family of Joshua Thornton.

Doctors diagnosed him with leukemia a year and a half ago.

Joshua's dad, Danny, says his son's cancer treatments took priority, and yard work was not a priority.

Now, it's fully landscaped, providing a place for the family to spend quality time.

Danny Thornton said, "We have learned to swallow a lot of our pride, and when someone so graciously offers to help with something like this to accept it, just to get in and do what they've done."

The owner of Cutting Edge Landscaping, Jim Bloodworth, says his father died from cancer two years ago. He says he decided then, that he wanted to help a family battling the disease.

He said, "The smile the on Joshua's face when he walked back here was awesome. You see the before and after pictures, what this looked like before, it was almost where he couldn't come out and play and rehab. I really feel like we made a big difference."

The yard make-over included a sprinkler system, sod, a fence, fire pit, patio and more.

It took about two weeks of work.

Bloodworth said Chris R. Sheridan, The Shops at River Crossing and Trees & More in Lizella also donated to the project.
