Top 10 Tips To Beat 99 Percent Of The Competition Online By ...

If you are advertising your business online, you are surely relying on organic traffic and paid traffic.

Most of the people think that advertising on the internet is identical to a method of advertising like local phone book advertisements, classified advertisements, radio or perhaps TV advertisements for your matter. You simply mention your organization title, items, address and telephone number and wait for the possible customers to walk-through your virtual door.

Of course, internet marketing is certainly not such as the above unless of course you are Wal Mart and also have ad budgets within the $ millions.

Typically speaking, someone will often look for a website searching for the keywords through Google or other search engines. Therefore the process goes something similar to this:

An individual has a particular problem to resolve or they're researching a specific subject. A good example will be a trouble with acne. Imagine for a moment, you aren't an acne problem likely to Google.com and keying in something like "how you can solve severe facial acne".

Within the above scenario, they entered an issue to a problem they've and they're searching for specific solutions consequently in the search. They did are not looking for exact website, they are searching for the keywords. Understanding this flow is really a critical online success factor.

What you need to understand noticeably would be that the above scenario relies particularly around a couple of "key phrases" such as "how to lose weight"

Now, to our Seo Guidelines

Well, you need to place yourself in your customer's place and picture what you will type right into an internet search. That way you will be able to effectively start to picture how you can optimize your website and drive more traffic.

Here are the 10 great tips and approaches to beat most of your online competitors. I am using these exact ten tips to optimize my money making ideas blog.

Article

Put a couple of key phrase relevant sentences towards the top of the revenue page. In case your method is an acne product just place a couple of key sentences towards the top of your page which include the appropriate words of acne and then any supporting key phrases in individual sentences.

H tags

Make your h1, h2, and h3 tags keyword relevant much like point number two above. Really, this is an important part of your on-site SEO. Bring that search phrase in almost any headline formatting tags like "h1", "h2", or "h3".

Images

Title irrelevant pictures a normal title or number. What I'm saying, for those who have an image in your web page, don't title that picture something similar to "acne_solutions.digital". Just title the image "salespageimage1.digital" rather. Google may place that image within "Google Images" after your web page will get indexed and when take your pick "acne_solutions.digital" however it is not related to real acne solutions, then people aren't likely to click it. This might end up lowering your general site relevance within Google. This certainly isn't what we are attempting to achieve here.

Title

Incorporate your most significant key phrases within the title tag of the web page. This means placing your search phrase among your "title tags" in your pages.

Bold Headline

A bold headline including your search phrase inside it beneath your key sentences above. For that non-techies, utilizing an "HTML tag" as the headline is an excellent method to attract attention of search engine spiders. It is just a visual formatting tag like using "bold" in MS Word.

Avoid Window pop-ups

Avoid using any window pop-ups. It is really an absolute no-no. People hate window pop-ups. Just do not do it - enough stated.

Outgoing links

Include outgoing links together with your key phrases like the anchor-text. This is ideal for Google mix connecting relevance. Don't hesitate to Google about it in order to find out more if that one is a touch confusing. This is a powerful tactic you need to implement.

"Email us" link in the footer

Always incorporate an "email us" page link to your title, email, telephone number, and home address. Again, good sense, but many individuals don't do that. Allow clients to make contact with you and also put that link in your footer.

Online Privacy Policy

8. Always incorporate an online privacy policy at the end of the pages. In present day world, which should go without having to say, it carries weight with Google and Google may often treat your site just a little much better than an identical site with no online privacy policy link in plain view.

What Do You Need to Avoid?

Lastly, stay away from words like Iron Clad Guarantee, testimonial, giveaway, etc. In case your page is extremely "salesy" Google can devalue your links. Just offer unique, honest "key-word-wealthy" content in your web page and you'll be in front of 99% of the competition.

To sum up, I really hope the above mentioned tips enable you to master the "real" way you have to market online using "good keyword research and a proper on-site SEO.

What can you type right into an internet search engine to locate your items?

Answer that question and put individual key phrases smartly throughout profits pages and you'll absolutely improve your overall degree of success in your internet marketing efforts and can certainly increase sales.

The buzzword tsunami that is ?big data"?a handy way of describing our vastly improved ability to collect and analyze humongous data sets?has dwarfed ?frictionless sharing? and ?cloud computing? combined. As befits Silicon Valley, ?big data? is mostly big hype, but there is one possibility with genuine potential: that it might one day bring loans?and credit histories?to millions of people who currently lack access to them. But what price, in terms of privacy and free will (not to mention the exorbitant interest rates), will these new borrowers have to pay?

In the not so distant past, the lack of good and reliable data about applicants with no credit history left banks little choice but to lump them together as high-risk bets. As a result, they either were offered loans at prohibitively high rates or had their applications rejected.

Thanks to the proliferation of social media and smart devices, Silicon Valley is awash with data. While much of it has no obvious connection to finance, some of it can still be used to make accurate predictions about the user's lifestyle and sociability. As a result, a new generation of companies is beginning to deploy algorithms that sieve through these data to separate trustworthy borrowers from those likely to default and to price their loans accordingly.

Some?like the Hong Kong-based Lenddo, which currently operates in the Philippines and Colombia?do so by scrutinizing the applicants' connections on Facebook and Twitter. The key to getting a successful loan from Lenddo is having a handful of highly trusted individuals in your social networks. If they vouch for you and you get the loan, your select friends will also be notified of your successes in repaying the loan. (In the past, Lenddo even threatened to notify them?exerting maximum peer pressure?if you had problems repaying the loan.)

Similarly, the U.S.-based LendUp, which hands out short-term loans with high interest rates while allowing its most trusted established clients to move to more attractive longer-term packages, looks at social media activity to ensure that factual data provided on the online application matches what can be inferred from Facebook and Twitter. Not surprisingly, most such startups?including Lenddo and LendUp?are financed by the same venture capitals who have backed much of the social media boom. (Accel Partners, one of the first investors in Facebook has funded Lenddo; LendUp has received support from Google Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz.)

Social media is just the tip of the iceberg. Wonga, an extremely ambitious online payday-lending company based in London, even considers the time of the day and the way a candidate clicks around the site in determining whether to grant a loan. It rejects two-thirds of all first-time applicants. Kreditech, a Germany company that seeks to provide "scoring as a service," looks at 8,000 indicators, such as "location data (GPS, micro-geographical), social graph (likes, friends, locations, posts), behavioral analytics (movement and duration on the webpage), people?s e-commerce shopping behavior and device data (apps installed, operating systems)."

Those without smartphones or Twitter accounts need not despair. Even simple cellphones are sources of data with great predictive value. Thus, Safaricom, Kenya?s largest mobile operator, studies how often its customers top up their airtime, how regularly they use the voice service, and how frequently they use the mobile money function. Once their trustworthiness has been established, Safaricom would gladly lend them money. But mobile operators moonlighting as banks aren?t the only ones leveraging these data: A Cambridge-based startup called Cignifi is using the length of calls, the time of the day, and the location of the call to guess the lifestyle?and hence the reliability?of loan applicants in the developing world.

All these efforts are premised on the sensible idea that current models of assessing creditworthiness focus on too few indicators, shutting off many potential borrowers who pay their bills on time but don't have good (or any) credit histories. ?Big data? can separate the lazy slackers from those who truly deserve better loan terms. The goal, then, is to get as many data as possible, perhaps even nudging potential applicants to pre-emptively disclose as much information about themselves as possible. In yet another puzzling paradox of the modern age, the rich people are spending money on expensive services that protect their privacy and improve their standing in Google's search results, while the poor people have little choice but to surrender their privacy in the name of social mobility.

Lenovo ThinkStation D30

The Lenovo ThinkStation D30 is the big stick in your golf bag. It's a powerful, expandable, professional level workstation that users will use to create digital media like animated movies, explore for gas and oil, or create designs for large items like bridges and aircraft. It has a staggering amount of computing power, two eight-core processors, both with Hyper-Threading and Turbo-Boost technologies. The ThinkStation D30 a behemoth in every sense of the word, and it's our latest Editors' Choice for dual-processor workstations.

Design and Features
The ThinkStation D30 is a full-size, traditional tower. It measures around 19 by 8.5 by 24 inches (HWD), so you'll need either a wide (and sturdy) desk or lots of space on the floor for the system. Like other Lenovo ThinkStation designs, the front panel is perforated with a honeycomb-like pattern, the front top of the system has a convenient handle, but you're going to use that handle mostly to position the system, as it weighs over 60 pounds fully loaded with components.

The front of the system has the tray-loading DVD burner, two USB 2.0 ports, a card reader, and audio ports for mic and headphones. On the back, there are a bunch of ports: Serial, eight USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, audio, two Ethernet ports (which can be connected to separate networks). The Nvidia Quadro 5000 card sports a DVI port, two DisplayPorts, a special connector for the Quadro 5000's 3D Vision Pro transmitter, and a FireWire 400 port.

Inside the system are two free PCI slots (for older expansion cards your company just can't stop using), a free PCIe x16 slot, and a free PCIe x4 slot. If you don't need FireWire 400, you can free the PCIe x16 slot that card is plugged into. The system has seven free SATA connectors on the motherboard, and some of those can be used with SAS drives, like the 300GB 15,000 rpm drive used as the C: drive. The system can accommodate four more hard drives in swappable sleds that don't need a screwdriver to use. Likewise, this capacious chassis has two optical drive bays free, and plenty of prewired power leads snaking through the internal space. There are also eight free memory slots for more ECC DDR3 memory. This is a lot more space than systems we've seen in the past, including the Apple Mac Pro series, the EC-winning Lenovo ThinkStation C20, and ThinkStation D20. Essentially, the D30 has enough internal space to accommodate the hardware for virtually any project you need to do with a workstation, whether that is creating the next Oscar-winning animated masterpiece, making sure those 15,000 pictures get resized and autocorrected before the deadline in the next hour, or searching for gas or gold or both in the deep reaches of darkest Peru.

The ThinkStation D30 has very little pre-loaded software on it. When you're computing billion dollar projects on a PC, you don't want popups from trialware ruining your engineers' concentration. As such, the pre-loaded software is limited to the operating system, ISV-certified drivers for the graphics card, and a few utilities like Lenovo Factory Recovery, Google Chrome, etc. The system comes with a three-year standard warranty, but you can extend that to five years upgraded with optional services like same day/next day turnarounds or on site repairs.

Lenovo ThinkStation D30

Performance
This is one of the highest performing systems we've had in the Labs. Each of the eight-core Intel Xeon E5-2687W processors has Hyper-Threading, so each CPU can handle 16 streams at the same time. Multiply that by two processors, and you'll have a system that can handle 32 streams of data simultaneously. This is a far cry from the first multi-threaded processors in PCs a scant 10 years ago.

The system returned a mind-boggling 25.31 points on the CineBench test, which measures the system's CPU-based 3D rendering prowess. To put that into perspective, high-end Core i7 processors in systems like the Velocity Micro ProMagix HD180 Max only manage 11.06 on the same test, and more pedestrian processors like the one in the Apple iMac 27-inch (Late 2012) top out at 7.36. Other benchmark tests are top-notch as well: The D30 has some of the fastest times we've seen on the Photoshop CS6 test, and the Handbrake video encode test isn't too shabby either. While the 3DMark11 test is oriented more to consumer grade graphics cards, it's nice to see high scores for the ThinkStation D30 on that test as well.

Sometimes, you just need to bring out the big stick, and the Lenovo ThinkStation D30 is that big stick. The sheer power of the dual eight-core Xeon CPUs plus the ability to add on more powerful Nvidia Quadro cards means that this is a system to scorch project deadlines in minutes rather than hours, or hours instead of days. Our last dual-processor workstation Editors' Choice was the Lenovo ThinkStation C20, which amazed us by putting dual Xeon CPUs in a more compact chassis. The Lenovo ThinkStation D30 now usurps that mantle, as the dual-processor workstation Editors' Choice. It wins with power, expandability, and a ruthless devotion to get your project done before any of your rivals can.

Subaru's First Hybrid Expected Soon, New York Auto Show Debut ...

Use your ? ?(arrow) keys to browse more stories

Older

Newer

There aren't many automakers left that don't offer some form of hybrid in their lineup, but Japanese firm Subaru can count themselves among the "have nots".

Subaru is best-known for its all-wheel drive systems rather than fuel efficiency, but since 2011's hybrid Advanced Tourer Concept, we've known there was something in the works.

Now, sources suggest the first hybrid Subaru could debut soon, potentially at the end of March, during the New York Auto Show.

It still isn't clear what hybrid system Subaru is going to use.

Mild hybrids have been suggested, with a system not dissimilar from that used by Honda in its Integrated Motor Assist setup. The 2011 Subaru Advanced Tourer concept used such a setup, with an electric motor mounted between a 2.0-liter flat-four gasoline engine, and a continuously-variable transmission.

A full hybrid has also been suggested, similar to that used by technology partner Toyota--but a mild hybrid system is looking more likely. This also means the car probably won't feature an electric-only mode--but it should at least help raise Subaru's fuel efficiency ratings.

Autoblog suggests the car could debut as soon as the New York Auto Show, and the model should eventually hit U.S. soil.

Mild hybrid or otherwise, an all-wheel drive Subaru hybrid should at least give those in Snow Belt states an extra option for winter-ready gas-sippers.

PFT: Poll: 61 percent of players disapprove of Goodell

Kyle Rudolph PicGetty Images

After the NFC jumped out in front 10-7 in the Pro Bowl?s initial 16 minutes, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson briefly returned the lead to the AFC by reading Giants quarterback Eli Manning?s eyes in zone coverage and picking off Eli?s pass, which was intended for Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Johnson beat everyone to the house for a 42-yard pick six, putting the AFC up 14-10 early in the second quarter.

The NFC rallied back on its next drive, keyed by a BeastMode run out of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch shed five tackles for a vicious 12-yard gain, easily the best run of a Pro Bowl that has so far been decidedly pass happy.

Two snaps after Lynch?s run, Eli hit Giants teammate Victor Cruz for a nine-yard touchdown on an in route out of the slot, giving the NFC the lead back at 17-14. Cruz, as he is known to do, performed a quick salsa dance in the end zone to celebrate.

Trailing by three points midway through the second quarter, the AFC replaced Peyton Manning at quarterback with Matt Schaub of the Texans. On a 40-yard bomb attempt intended for Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas, Schaub was intercepted by Falcons safety William Moore. Moore returned the pick 27 yards to the NFC 28.

Eli got aggressive with under three minutes remaining in the first half. He noticed Rudolph in Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali?s coverage down the right sideline, waved Rudolph to continue his route downfield, and hit him for a deep gain of 52 behind a lumbering Hali.

The first flag of the game was called on Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey toward the end of the second quarter. When explaining the penalty, official Ed Hochuli made sure to announce that ?Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl.? (Yes, Hochuli really said that.)

Bailey was covering Bucs receiver Vincent Jackson in the end zone when whistled, so the ball was placed at the AFC?s one-yard line.

Lynch punched it in from a yard out, increasing the NFC?s lead to 24-14. Eli led yet another touchdown drive to close out the half, going 75 yards in the final 68 seconds with a three-yard scoring strike to Rudolph to cap it off.

As of halftime, top performers in the 2013 Pro Bowl so far have included Rudolph (five catches, game-high 122 yards, one touchdown), Jackson (five catches, 86 yards, one touchdown) and Cruz (game-high eight catches, 66 yards, touchdown).

Through two quarters, Rudolph is the favorite for Pro Bowl MVP.

French military enters Malian town of Timbuktu

PARIS (AP) ? The chief French military spokesman says French forces have entered the north Malian town of Timbuktu after seizing the airport and roads leading to the fabled city overnight.

French Col. Thierry Burkhard said Monday that there had been no combat with the Islamists who have ruled Timbuktu for nearly 10 months, but he said the French and Malian forces do not yet control the town.

News of their arrival came just hours after Timbuktu's mayor confirmed that ancient manuscripts had been torched in Timbuktu by fleeing extremists.

Over the weekend, French and Malian forces entered another northern provincial capital, Gao.

While the Islamists have not yet put up much of a fight, it remains to be seen what kind of opposition the forces will face in the coming days.

Ryan says deep budget cuts likely unavoidable

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chairman of the House Budget Committee says Republicans will oppose tax increases and, as a result, deep, unpopular budget cuts will likely take effect.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that automatic spending cuts are scheduled to take hold because, quote, "Democrats have opposed our efforts to replace those cuts with others."

Democrats have insisted taxes be part of the equation to dodge across-the-board spending cuts that are set to hit the Pentagon and many domestic programs. The spending cuts were set in motion in the hopes of spurring lawmakers to strike a large-scale deal to reduce the deficit.

Ryan was the 2012 vice presidential nominee. He says the country is heading toward a debt crisis if it doesn't confront its spending.

Deadly smoke, lone blocked exit: 230 die in Brazil

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (AP) ? Flames raced through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, killing more than 230 people as panicked partygoers gasped for breath in the smoke-filled air, stampeding toward a single exit partially blocked by those already dead. It appeared to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade.

Witnesses said a flare or firework lit by band members started the blaze in Santa Maria, a university city of about 225,000 people, though officials said the cause was still under investigation.

Television images showed smoke pouring out of the Kiss nightclub as shirtless young men who had attended a university party joined firefighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at windows and walls to free those trapped inside.

Guido Pedroso Melo, commander of the city's fire department, told the O Globo newspaper that firefighters had a hard time getting inside the club because "there was a barrier of bodies blocking the entrance."

Teenagers sprinted from the scene desperately seeking help. Others carried injured and burned friends away in their arms.

"There was so much smoke and fire, it was complete panic, and it took a long time for people to get out, there were so many dead," survivor Luana Santos Silva told the Globo TV network.

The fire spread so fast inside the packed club that firefighters and ambulances could do little to stop it, Silva said.

Another survivor, Michele Pereira, told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that she was near the stage when members of the band lit flares that started the conflagration.

"The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward," she said. "At that point, the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak, but in a matter of seconds it spread."

Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, started playing at 2:15 a.m. "and we had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning"

"It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless, we never had any trouble with it.

"When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working"

He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely.

Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello said by telephone that the toll had risen to 233 with the death of a hospitalized victim ? he said earlier that the death toll was likely made worse because the nightclub appeared to have just one exit through which patrons could exit.

Officials counted 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in Santa Maria, which is located at the southern tip of Brazil, near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay.

Federal Health Minister Alexandre Padhilha told a news conference that most of the 117 people treated in hospitals had been poisoned by gases they breathed during the fire. Only a few suffered serious burns, he said.

Brazil President Dilma Roussef arrived to visit the injured after cutting short her trip to a Latin American-European summit in Chile.

"It is a tragedy for all of us," Roussef said.

Most of the dead apparently were asphyxiated, according to Dr. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a professor at the medical school of the Federal University of Santa Maria who went to the city's Caridade Hospital to help victims.

Beltrame said he was told the club had been filled far beyond its capacity during a party for students at the university's agronomy department.

Survivors, police and firefighters gave the same account of a band member setting the ceiling's soundproofing ablaze, he said.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Beltrame told The Associated Press by telephone.

"The toxic smoke made people lose their sense of direction so they were unable to find their way to the exit. At least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom. Apparently they confused the bathroom door with the exit door."

In the hospital, the doctor "saw desperate friends and relatives walking and running down the corridors looking for information," he said, calling it "one of the saddest scenes I have ever witnessed."

Rodrigo Moura, identified by the newspaper Diario de Santa Maria as a security guard at the club, said it was at its maximum capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000, and partygoers were pushing and shoving to escape.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309.

In 2004, at least 194 people died in a fire at an overcrowded nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Seven members of a band were sentenced to prison for starting the flames.

Several years later, in December 2009, a blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, killed 152 people after an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches.

Similar circumstances led to a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people in the United States. Pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling of a Rhode Island music venue.

The band performing in Santa Maria, Gurizada Fandangueira, plays a driving mixture of local Brazilian country music styles. Guitarist Martin told Radio Gaucha the musicians are already seeing hostile messages.

"People on the social networks are saying we have to pay for what happened," he said. "I'm afraid there could be retaliation".

Obama says rural voices need to be heard in gun debate: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged gun control advocates to listen to views of rural Americans who use guns for hunting and said bridging a cultural divide in attitudes to gun ownership will be critical to his administration's push to curb gun violence.

"If you grew up and your dad gave you a hunting rifle when you were 10, and you went out and spent the day with him and your uncles, and that became part of your family's traditions, you can see why you'd be pretty protective of that," Obama said in an interview with The New Republic magazine published on Sunday on its website.

Obama made gun control a top priority for his second term after 20 children and six adults were killed in December by a gunman at a school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Obama spoke with The New Republic on January 16, the same day he announced he would put the full weight of his office behind urging Congress to approve an assault weapons ban and background checks for all gun buyers.

"Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," Obama said.

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," he said.

Vice President Joe Biden is leading the White House effort to talk to Americans about the gun control proposals and galvanize public support to pressure Congress to act. On Friday, he spoke in Virginia about the plan.

Gun ownership rights are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, and past efforts to restrict gun ownership have been blocked by gun owners, the National Rifle Association and their supporters in Congress.

Rural Americans traditionally vote Republican, and Obama was criticized during the 2008 election campaign for comments about how small-town Americans "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" - comments for which he later apologized.

Asked whether he had ever fired a gun, Obama said he had gone skeet shooting with guests at Camp David, a country residence in rural Maryland where presidents traditionally host foreign leaders.

"Up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time," Obama said.

Is there a way to mark a branch in the tree as a dead end? - Family ...

I am wondering if it is possible ot mark a branch of the family tree as a dead end, so I can stop going into that branch and looking for people that do not exist. I keep forgetting which family either did not have kids or died out without kids and spending time every once in a while researching to find someone that does not exist.

On a side note - is it just my family or is it common for many branches in a family to die out? I do not have a number on it off the top of my head, but this has happened probably 20 times so far since my GGG grandparents. At least 4 of their 7 kids lines died out, and of the other 3 kids who had kids, I keep running into descendant lines that die out.

Anyway - hope the original question is not too weird. Just looking for a way to easily mark a line as done so I can stop poking around.

Doubts raised about fairness of Delhi rape trial

NEW DELHI (AP) ? In the court of public opinion, the men being tried in the gang rape of an Indian university student should be hanged in a public square.

That demand for swift justice might make it impossible for them to get a fair trial in a court of law. Already, there are plenty of portents.

Amid the heightened emotions that have surrounded this case a local bar association has stopped its members from representing the men citing the heinous nature of the crime. The three grandstanding lawyers who have rushed in to represent the accused spent weeks taking potshots at each other instead of coordinating a defense. Two lawyers fought for days over which one was representing one of the defendants.

And the case is being heard by a brand new fast track court, set up in the wake of the rape to deal with sexual assaults in the capital, that is under pressure to reach a verdict within weeks. Finally, whatever is said or submitted in court has to stay in the room -- a gag order by the judge prevents the media from reporting anything about the case.

"However wicked and depraved society may perceive a person to be, he deserves a fair trial. He deserves a good defense," said Markandey Katju, a retired judge of India's Supreme Court.

"That some of those charged are the real culprits and some are innocent ... that is a very real possibility," he said, adding that in India the police "spreads its net wide."

As details of the attack have emerged Katju said he feared the trial may be overrun by emotion rather than the calm voice of reason.

"You can't decide cases on sentiment. That's lynch law."

The specifics of the gang rape are horrifying. According to the police report, the attack lasted at least 45 minutes. There were six attackers, one of whom claims to be a juvenile and is being tried separately. Each of the men raped the 23-year-old woman, with at least two taking turns driving the bus. They penetrated her with two metal rods, causing such severe internal injuries that doctors later found parts of her intestines floating freely inside her abdomen.

The battered woman and her badly beaten male friend were then thrown out of the moving bus and lay naked and bleeding on the side of a busy road on a cold December night.

The attack was so brutal that the woman died two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.

Within two days of the attack the police arrested the six accused. According to the police all six confessed their crimes. The police report said that DNA evidence from the men tied all of them in the rape and murder. According to police documents blood and saliva swabs from the accused matched the DNA found on the victim's injuries. The victim's blood was also found on the clothes, underwear and slippers of the accused.

The attack in the heart of New Delhi brought protesters into the streets demanding the government protect women and ensure those attacked get justice. In response, the city government set up five fast track courts to swiftly handle those cases, keeping them out of India's overburdened regular court system, where trials can drag on for years if not decades.

As the police framed charges against the men and prepared for trial the bar association of Saket, the district where the case is being heard, declared that their members would not represent the men. They were following a precedent set by lawyers' groups across India over the last few years, which have banned their members from representing those accused of terrorism and other heinous crimes.

"This is completely unconstitutional and unethical," said Katju. "Right minded lawyers should defy and ignore such rulings."

Outside the courtroom the cries for a quick trial and execution of the five men have persisted.

"They should be handed over to the public and hanged," said Prakash, a 51-year-old gardener who had come to court on a personal matter but waited to get a glimpse of the accused being whisked into court. She uses only one name.

The three men who rushed forth to represent the accused were not members of the local bar and have spent more time fighting each other than putting up a defense.

One insisted he would ask the Supreme Court to move the trial out of Delhi because emotions were too high to hold a fair trial here. But when a second lawyer made a similar appeal, the first changed his mind and vehemently opposed it.

One lawyer, M.L. Sharma, has accused police of planting the other two defense lawyers to ensure a guilty verdict.

"I'm the only hurdle standing in their way," Sharma said earlier this week. Even as he made his allegations, fellow defense counsel V.K. Anand stepped up to say that Sharma's client had decided to fire his lawyer ? and hire him.

The dispute over who would represent the defendant was only resolved Thursday ? the day the trial started. Sharma dropped out of the trial, saying he feared his client would be tortured to get him to change his lawyer. Anand replaced him.

Sharma has accused police of beating all five men to extract their confessions, then later amended that to say only his client was beaten. He also made unsubstantiated accusations that the victim's male friend was somehow responsible for the deadly assault, only to backtrack later.

Another lawyer, A.P. Singh, said the only reason he agreed to represent two of the accused was because their families had begged his mother for help.

"My mother has a kind heart and an order from her is like an order from God," he said, posing dramatically for the cameras.

Anand hasn't spoken about his strategy, but both Sharma and Singh have claimed at least once that their clients were not even on the bus during the attack.

In the past, courts across the country have criticized the police for coercing confessions and even planting evidence to get convictions.

"We set so little store by how the police functions in this country. There's no reason to accept the police's version of events in this case without thorough legal scrutiny," said Jawahar Raja, a lawyer and activist.

The defense is made even more complicated by the fact the case is being tried in a fast track court. As a result the police has put together its case at rapid speed. The trial has started even as defense lawyers are falling into place.

"Justice takes some time. It's all very easy to talk about fast track courts," said Katju, adding that cases should be tried quickly and efficiently but without a looming deadline.

"A judge has to read all the documents, hear the lawyers, apply his mind. It's not a magic lamp that with a swish you can dispose of a case."

Why your business should start using video online conferencing ...

Talking to any clients, potential new customers and investors is always important. At all costs, you?ll probably want to maintain a regular dialogue with them, but did you ever consider the price you?re paying for talking to them? You might not realise it, but it?s possible to save your business money while making communication easier with the help of web conference services offered by Powwownow. It could make a huge difference to your company and the way it works, saving money and time in the process.

In terms of money saving, conference calling via audio and/or video can really help to cut down the cost of communications. How it does so is eliminate the need to travel long distances and spend a small fortune on fuel or tickets to get to a meeting point. Organising a conference call in place of a traditional meeting will save your business plenty of money, and doing so several times over could mean the difference between just breaking even and making a sizeable profit depending on the size of your business.

videoconferencing

Web conferencing can also be a real time saver. As well as saving money on trips to meetings that could cost hundreds at a time, using web conferencing to communicate with important people can save time that would have otherwise been spent travelling. The time saves could be spent on other aspects on the business such as accounting, paperwork or even on arranging extra conference calls which may help to get you additional clients and therefore increase your income, which is great if you think about it.

Ease of communication is another reason to consider using video conferencing. You can invite people from all over the world to any conference call, which makes it preferable to a normal phone call. You can get your point across in a clear manner and even use visual aids during a video conference call too. Aside from that, there?s also the opportunity to collaborate with employees in different parts of the office, not to mention anyone who works from home or another remote location, which makes it a must-have tool for anyone who wants to communicate easily and efficiently.

Cameron promises action on tax avoidance

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron turned up the pressure on Thursday on multinational corporations who seek to lower their tax bills aggressively, promising action to limit tax avoidance strategies after a public backlash in Britain.

The issue of tax avoidance by big companies has turned toxic as millions of Britons struggle against meagre wage growth and austerity measures to reduce a budget deficit. Firms that are viewed as paying too little tax have been targeted by demonstrators and boycotts.

"I am a low-tax Conservative but I'm not a companies-should-pay-no-tax Conservative," Cameron told business leaders and investors in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"Individuals and businesses must pay their fair share," he said, adding that he would use his presidency of the Group of Eight industrialised nations to push the point.

Cameron did not mention any companies by name. At the height of the uproar last year, British MPs singled out Google, Amazon and Starbucks as companies that pay very little tax in Britain on profit from sales there. Executives from the three were summoned to testify before parliament and explain their operations.

The firms say they comply with British tax law, but under a tide of public outrage and in-store demonstrations, Starbucks last year said it would pay around 20 million pounds in corporation tax in Britain over the next two years.

"Any businesses who think that they can carry on dodging that fair share or that they can keep on selling to the UK and setting up ever-more complex tax arrangements abroad to squeeze their tax bill right down - well, they need to wake up and smell the coffee," Cameron said.

"The public who buy from them have had enough."

Much of the anger has come from smaller local retailers who are unable to take advantage of international tax arrangements while they struggle against the cost of high rents and low consumer spending.

With politicians ramping up the pressure, Goldman Sachs also came in for criticism when announced plans, since scrapped, to delay paying bonuses to its bankers in Britain to exploit an income tax cut for top earners that is due in April.

The bank changed its plans after being publicly rebuked by the Bank of England Governor Mervyn King.

"David Cameron has been quick to highlight the problem of tax avoidance but slow to actually do anything about it," the TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA), a lobby group that campaigns for lower tax rates, said in response to the speech.

"Families are left feeling short-changed and let down by their politicians because international corporations can take advantage of loopholes and reliefs not open to them," it added.

It was a view that struck a chord on the streets of a cold London on Thursday. "It's disgusting ... We pay tax, we haven't got a choice," said Clive Read, a 54-year-old printer. "They should pay their taxes, just like other companies."

The Trades Union Congress - Britain's labour union federation - also said Cameron's government needed to make the British tax system far more transparent.

Reducing tax bills for companies may have got a little bit harder after the country's Supreme Court ruled that advice by accountants could not be kept secret in the same way that legal counsel is confidential.

"It's time to call for more responsibility and for governments to act accordingly," Cameron said.

Djokovic advances to Australian Open final

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to his third consecutive Australian Open final with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 4-seeded David Ferrer on Thursday night.

The top-ranked Djokovic was in dominating form, hitting 30 crisp winners in the 1-hour, 29-minute match. He is aiming to be the first man in the Open era to win three consecutive Australian titles.

On Sunday, he'll meet the winner of Friday's semifinal between No. 2-ranked Roger Federer, a four-time Australian champion, and U.S. Open winner Andy Murray, who is ranked No. 3.

Djokovic, who is now unbeaten in five Grand Slam head-to-heads with Ferrer, allowed his opponent only four points in the first four games of the last set to strangle any chance of a comeback.

(AP) ? Spain's unemployment rate shot up to a record 26.02 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, leaving almost six million people out of work, the National Statistics Institute said Thursday.

The rate rose from 25.02 percent in the third quarter as the country's recession deepened.

Over the year, 691,700 more people lost their jobs, the institute said, adding that there were now 1.8 million households in which no one was employed.

Spain is in the throes of its second recession in just over three years following the collapse of its once-booming real estate sector in 2008.

Battling to reduce a swollen deficit and avoid a bailout, the year-old conservative government has made major financial and labor reforms and applied severe austerity measures such as cutbacks in wages and spending as well as tax increases.

The austerity measures are aimed at lowering the deficit, but are hurting the economy in the short-term, while the reforms will only help growth in the longer-term. That means the economy will suffer more before it recovers.

The central bank this week estimated that the recession deepened in the fourth quarter of last year, the economy shrinking by 0.6 percent compared with the previous three-month period.

It was the sixth consecutive quarterly contraction. The economy contracted by 0.4 percent in the third quarter.

The bank estimated economic activity was down 1.7 percent in the fourth quarter from the year-earlier period and down 1.3 percent for the whole of 2012.

The statistics institute will announce official economic growth figures on Jan. 30, while Europe's main statistics office Eurostat unveils its estimate on Feb. 14.

Egypt opposition leader aims to break Islamist dominance

CAIRO (Reuters) - A coalition of Egyptian opposition groups is forging a common electoral platform as it seeks to capitalize on setbacks for Islamists who have dominated the country's politics since an Arab Spring uprising.

Hamdeen Sabahy, a firebrand politician who ran for president last year, told Reuters the opposition National Salvation Front coalition could win a parliamentary majority in April if it rises above differences that split its ranks in past elections.

The well-organized Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists could take most seats in the vote but liberals and other opponents look likely to pose a much bigger challenge this time.

They could be aided by growing frustration at the failure of President Mohamed Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood allies to steady an economy hammered by two years of turmoil since autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak was ousted almost two years ago.

"The Front will set aside its differences now in favor of the national goal it is heading for," Sabahy said in an interview at the headquarters of his Popular Current movement in Cairo. "Our goal is to prevent one group's hegemony in the parliament, the government and the presidency."

Islamists won about 70 percent of seats in a parliamentary election last year but the assembly was dissolved by court order months later because the electoral rules were deemed to be unconstitutional.

"If the elections are honest and we run with good management, which is what we expect, we will get more than 50 percent of seats," said Sabahy, 58.

Sabahy said the Front, whose membership ranged from unabashed socialists to nationalists and economic liberals, was forging a common economic platform focused on principles of social justice that united those disparate ideologies.

Sabahy came third in a presidential race last year that Mursi went on to win. Analysts said liberals or others would have done better had they agreed on a single candidate.

NEW CREDIBILITY

The National Salvation Front was formed as an expression of broad indignation at Mursi's bid to expand his powers late last year. It opposed his decision to hurry through a new constitution drawn up by an Islamist-led assembly.

The basic law was passed in a referendum, but the Front had proved it could overcome the divisions that have benefited its Islamist rivals and emerged with new credibility on the street.

But the Front is still divided about electoral strategy, with a revolutionary youth wing opposed to allowing figures it says are linked to the Mubarak era to stand on the opposition coalition's ticket.

Some of those figures are notables in provincial Egypt who have amassed local power and influence, helping them compete with well-funded Islamist candidates.

"Some of the parties in the National Salvation Front now can compensate for weakness in areas where there is hegemony of traditional family structures and old interests in rural areas," said Sabahy.

Islamists have spent decades building up a national network of support through charity and other social work. But Sabahy said the opposition was expanding its influence.

Analysts say his Popular Current has been gaining ground across the nation of 83 million, though he said the opposition's still lacked strongholds in rural areas.

Seeking to build momentum, Sabahy said Friday's second anniversary of the anti-Mubarak uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 would be a chance for the opposition to deliver its message about the failings of Mursi's rule.

Many Egyptians are unhappy that the government has not begun to revive creaking infrastructure. This month, a train accident killed 19 people and a building collapse led to 22 deaths.

"(Friday) is a chance for us to say that poverty is not a written destiny for the Egyptian people and deaths due to negligence in trains and collapsing buildings are not destiny. They are the outcome of management that lacks efficiency, honesty and democracy," he said.

My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender

Western Digital continues to make its mark into the consumer networking hardware space with the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender ($106.25, street). This small box is designed to extend a wireless network's signal to those notorious "dead zones." The My Net Extender is an attractive device, with unique signal strength indicators to help you place it in an optimal location. Plus, it is easy to set up and does a good job of extending Wi-Fi.

Specs and Design
The My Net extender is quite small measuring 5.2" x 2.0" x 6.0 "(HWD). It's meant to operate upright on a stand attached to its base. I find its form factor more preferable over extenders that connect right into a power outlet, such as the Cisco Linksys Wireless-N Range/Extender Bridge (RE10000)
because it's easier to place the extender in different locations to get the best connection with a router.

Western Digital's device is a dual-band range extender, able to extend either a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz wireless network. This dual-band capability gives it an advantage over many other extenders on the market, which tend to only support the 2.4 GHz band. A word of caution about extending 5 GHz Wi-Fi: the 5 GHz band is not great at sustaining throughput over long distances. Better to use the 2.4 GHz band for larger coverage areas. Using even a dual-band extender like the My Net on 2.4 GHz is more beneficial for longer-distance coverage than the 5 GHz band. Still, it's nice that you have the option of working with either band. This extender supports 802.11n and will also work with legacy 802.11x routers.

The rear panel has a power button, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button for connecting to a WPS-supported router, and a toggle switch to operate the extender in either 2.4 or 5 GHz mode. On the front of the device are two LEDs; one for power and the other for wireless status which lights once the extender is successfully connected to a router.

On the side of the device is a unique feature:? 18 LEDs that indicate signal strength. The more LEDs lit, the stronger the signal. The double row of small blue lights not only looks attractive, but provides important information; as you position the extender in proximity to the router it's paired with, you can keep an eye on these LEDs to see if the signal strength drops or increases.

With the My Net extender about 30 feet away from my router, I saw 12 LEDs lit up. Moving the extender about another 15 feet closer to the router lit all 18 LEDs. The LEDs provide a handy, quick way to position the extender in the best location without having to fire up some software utility.

Configuration
The extender ships with a quick install guide and setup is indeed, quick. In fact, you can get the extender set up in only three steps. Plug it in; push the WPS button on the extender and on the router you want to connect it with; and place it in the best location using the LED signal strength indicators.

I set up the extender with Western Digital's My Net N900 router. The three steps worked perfectly. In seconds, I had the N900's wireless network extended.
Of course, a wireless extender should work with just about any router. I tested connecting via WPS to a Linksys WRT160N router.? However, the two devices would not pair using WPS. I was able to get the My Net extender connected to the Linksys router by connecting an Ethernet cable to the extender and going into the extender's web-based management interface. Connecting to the extender requires a settings change that takes a lengthy 180 seconds but otherwise, there was no issue getting the extender connected to the Linksys router using the software.

Performance
The My Net offered impressive performance on par with the excellent Cisco Linksys RE1000 extender. In the same room as the router, the My Net extender gave the fastest throughput to date, at 34 Mbps. Moving 75 feet away from the router, that throughput dropped to 4 Mbps, considerably slower. Still, 4 Mbps was enough to browse the web and is frankly, impressive in my testing environment which has heavy RF interference from many access points in proximity and lots of glass and concrete. The RE1000 did a tad better at 75 feet at 6 Mbps?not much of a difference to impact web browsing.

By the time I reached a distance of 100 feet away from the router, the My Net extender, as with the RE1000, could no longer register throughput on the Ixia IxChariot utility I use to test. I was able to surf the Internet though without too much lag. By the time I reached 150 feet, I was still connected to the Wi-Fi network, but surfing was so slow that browsing became pretty frustrating.

Below is a performance chart comparing several wireless extenders to the My Net. While you can see that BearExtender's device still registered throughput beyond using the IxChariot utility at 100 feet away from the router, only the RE1000 and the My Net actually allowed decent web browsing at that distance.

Easy Extension
The My Net RE1000 has a very easy setup, works with older routers, and allowed me to browse the web up 150 feet away from my router. It tested with slightly slower throughput than the RE1000, but it allows for more flexible positioning than the RE1000?because the device is stand-alone and not connected directly into an electric socket.

While the RE1000 is an Editors' Choice for wireless extenders because of it's negligibly faster throughput, the My Net Wi-Fi extender is a worthy alternative with the bonus of those LEDs for checking signal strength as you test where best to place the device.? The My Net Extender is an easy 4 out of 5 star earner for wireless extenders/bridges.

What started as a favor to repay those who helped Robbin Steif to find the next chapter in her career today is a growing web analytics firm, still putting final touches on its new South Side digs.

?I have no idea how I even knew there were web analytics, but I did,? said Steif, CEO of LunaMetrics, which she incorporated in 2004 and started up the following year to help companies glean the most from their website traffic data. Since then, the firm has expanded into search engine optimization, social media and pay-per-click advertising.

LunaMetrics doubled sales in 2012 to about $1.5 million, Steif said.

The firm is the only Google Analytics Certified Partner in Western Pennsylvania and teaches classes on the East Coast to help companies get the most out of the search engine?s free service, which provides detailed data and statistics generated from website visits.

Kevin Stecko hired LunaMetrics as a consultant in early 2012 to help with 80sTees.com, his web-based business in Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland County.

?I like that they are local. That?s why I started with them and had heard of them,? Stecko said. ?As a small company, it?s easier for me to pay someone who knows how to use (Google Analytics) than for me to hire someone.?

Each month, Stecko is able to get detailed information on any single customer or a broader look at about all visitors to his website, such as where they originated online, what products they looked at on his site and what they bought, if anything.

?One thing it does not tell you is why, but having all of that information helps you formulate reasons as for why,? Stecko said. ?If we?re spending money to get people to the site, we want to show them what they want and increase the chances of them making a purchase.?

In addition to help with Google Analytics, Stecko said he has used LunaMetrics for Facebook advertising and might start using them for search-engine optimization, a service designed to boost the visibility of a company?s website.

This month, LunaMetrics is expanding its Google Analytics course to include more advanced training in Application Programming Interface, or API. It will beta test the new training during a five-day session starting on Monday in Pittsburgh.

This year, LunaMetrics is focused on growing its role as a Google Analytics premium authorized reseller, government sales and in predictive data, Steif said.

Its staff doubled to 13 last year, forcing its move into new offices on South 18th Street in September. Steif said she is looking to fill three new positions in paid search, analytics and sales.

She couldn?t have envisioned such growth just a few years ago. ?Now, I can easily imagine having 30,? said Steif of Squirrel Hill.

The Harvard business school graduate moved to Pittsburgh in 1986 from New York, where she worked for IBM?s direct response group.

She was chief financial officer for a Downtown technology design firm and innovation lab and later started Send Me No Flowers, which sold gifts by direct mail and e-commerce. She sold the business in 2001.

Looking to get back into the financial world, Steif sought help in networking circles. In return for people taking the time to offer advice and guidance, Steif offered her expertise to help their businesses through her knowledge of the budding world of web analytics.

It then dawned on her that this thank-you gesture actually could be a career.

?It was sort of the ?Internet winter,? ? Steif said, referring to the slowdown in e-commerce as a result of the dot-com bust, Y2K and 9/11. ?(The Internet) wasn?t the go-go place it was in 1999 or the place it is today. It was in a lull. But it wasn?t going away.?

Steif started LunaMetrics in 2004 and landed her first client, an indoor-outdoor lighting company, in 2005.

Growth was slow in the beginning, Steif said, because of challenges many new companies confront: no sales, no search-engine ranking and no reputation.

?No one knew who we were, and I didn?t have a sales force,? she said. ?I didn?t have much of an Internet presence even though we were an Internet business.?

In 2005, Google purchased Urchin on Demand web analytics software and released its own brand later that year.

While the data was good, the documentation telling people how to use the service wasn?t, Steif said. She and other users around the world discussed Google Analytics issues online, and Steif even wrote an e-book about how to use it.

?That?s one of the ways I came to their attention,? she said.

At an eMetrics Summit conference in Washington in 2006, Steif was seated at a table with several people from Google Analytics. They quickly asked if she would be interested in becoming a certified partner. Steif didn?t hesitate.

Within weeks, LunaMetrics? slow times were over.

?That was our big break,? Steif said. ?It started raining business.?

The deal with Google gave LunaMetrics legitimacy and drove business its way.

?It was amazing going from virtually no business to having a lot,? she said.

Today, LunaMetrics has 40 or more customers at any given time. In addition to 80sTees.com, other current and former clients include Heartland Homes, GNC and Duke Power.

?My biggest challenge now is hiring,? Steif said.
