The problem with the Law of Attraction and other self-help/self ...

I was making a margarita and smiling as I looked around my kitchen.? It was one of those really cool moments when everything felt right.??Then a thought popped into my head.? If the Law of Attraction gurus are to be believed, the moment I was experiencing was actually created at some previous time.

After a quick mental review, during which I?saw the way my life has?see-sawed up and down in recent years, ?I got another, more unsettling thought.? If LOA is valid, then it is the Law of Attraction itself?that is the reason my life see-saws wildly up and down.? What a disturbing notion.

Here?s my logic.? I am just coming out of several years of intense chaos (thank you EMF Sensitivity).? Things are finally going up.? However, if this up moment was created at some distantly previous one (trust me, I was not a happy camper being sick and very likely wasn?t sending out happy vibes), then the unhappy vibes from?the more recent times of EMF related chaos have?already created a new low just waiting around some future corner.

Or, could it be that because I?m feeling good in this present moment it might cancel out the negative feelings/vibes that are coming up from behind?

Suddnely I become obsessed with technique.? Am I doing it right?? Can I stamp out previous bad thoughts?? What do I do?? How do I know if it?s working if the future isn?t even here yet?

Fortunately, I don?t get worked up about technique.? In fact, I?ve learned how defeating that is.? I?ll give an example.

When I took the Silva Method Basic Lecture series, I came to realize that if I moved my eyes as instructed, I wound up with a nasty headache.? However, if I just let my eyes go naturally, I still achieved the objective, with a lot less pain.

I later used an advanced technique that combines NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Silva.? Once again, I found my eyes going in a completely different direction than given in the instructions.? However, since I was getting excellent results, I didn?t get caught up in the idea I wasn?t doing it right.? After all, if it?s working for me, that?s what matters.

Herein lays the problem with LOA and other self empowerment and self help programs.? Too many people are focused on duplicating a technique without recognizing that taking a good thing and tailoring it to fit the individual significantly increases the chance for success.

It?s natural that people want to do exactly what an instructor tells them.? Children learn by aping the behavior of adults.? Imitation is the highest form of flattery.? However, by the time we are grown, we too often forget that individuality and creativity have a valid place in our lives.

When I write, when I teach, I?frequently state this is how I do it and point out that the experience, the technique may be different for them.? I encourage people to do it in the way that works for them.

When I read criticism of programs, people claiming it didn?t work for them, I have to wonder.? Did they ever stop to?ask why?? Maybe there wasn?t enough self in the self empowerment/self improvement/self help part.
