Evansville Woman Beating Ovarian Cancer Odds

This year, more than 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer.? The cancer will be deadly for over half of those women.? Thee startling numbers are exactly why Wednesday is named Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day.? But there's one Tri-State woman who's beating the odds.

Toni Howell's abnormal periods made her think she was going through menopause, but when her symptoms didn't go away, she realized something was wrong.? In February of this year, Toni was diagnosed with Phase 1 ovarian cancer, "I was shocked at what they found out, it was scary."?
???
Toni is a favorite with the staff at the Chancellor Center for Oncology at Deaconess.? She's halfway finished with her treatments.? After having surgery in February, she's gone through three out of six chemotherapy treatments.

Nurse practitioner Lisa Helmerich says it's patients like Toni that make her so passionate about her work, "Once you have that passion for oncology, you just don't leave.? It's a part of your life, it's a part of your ministry."

Lisa says it is part of her mission to share information about ovarian cancer, and Wednesday's first ever World Ovarian Cancer Day is a perfect opportunity to help educate women and help them detect ovarian cancer early. But what should women be looking for? "Change in bowel habits, post menopausal bleeding, abdominal cramping and bloating." ???

Toni says she feels fortunate she got her symptoms checked out when she did. She also hopes other women will take the time to take care of their bodies. "If your body is, like mine was telling me something wasn't normal, even something small, go have it checked out just to be safe!"
