Florida combats tourists looking to score painkillers

Extensive crackdowns on clinics known as "pill mills" are driving drug tourism away from states, including Florida.

Florida is among more than a dozen states posing challenges for local, state and federal authorities in what they call "drug tourism.?

Dealers come to Florida and Georgia searching for unethical doctors willing to write large prescriptions for OxyContin, Vicodin and Percocet, which the dealers then sell on the street for as much as $100 per pill, according to a report by USA Today.

Extensive crackdowns on clinics known as "pill mills" are driving the criminals away, and the state has seen a drop after a 2011 law added tough penalties for doctors caught taking part in prescription drug trafficking, USA Today added.

On June 29, Davie resident Vincent Colangelo, 44, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute and dispense large amounts of oxycodone without a legitimate medical purpose, money laundering and filing a false income tax return.
