Software update v4.5.141 for AT&T Motorola ATRIX now available - Includes security and stability fixes

 Android Central

If you're a AT&T Motorola Atrix owner, you'll want to go ahead and check for software updates. Many folks in the Android Central forums have reported that v4.5.141 is now rolling out to the masses. It's not Ice Cream Sandwich in any way but the changelog does highlight some issues folks may have been having with their device. As noted by Motorola:

  • Security - Implemented latest Google Android security fixes
  • Stability - Improvements to memory function as it relates to media applications and ability to prevent need for re-booting when phone is impacted by heavy loading or high temperatures
  • Bluetooth - Enhancement which allows you to launch voice command from bluetooth enabled headset when phone is asleep
  • Wi-Fi - Improvements to Wi-Fi settings to deliver better overall consumer experience as well as  to make it easier to use Mobile Hotspot with your phone
  • Messaging - Improvements to text messaging capability to deliver better user experience
  • Contacts - Improvements are made to maintain all phone book contacts after the OTA upgrade

Security and stability -- that's what we like to hear. Ice Cream Sandwich would have been better but we'll take what we can get since we know Motorola is still working on things,

Barca plays Valencia, Madrid faces Santander

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:29 p.m. ET Feb. 16, 2012

MADRID (AP) -Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou as it looks to rebound from its second loss of the season and keep pressure on Spanish leader Real Madrid, whose record-setting pace has provided a 10-point lead over the Catalan team ahead of playing Racing Santander.

Madrid has won 17 of its last 18 games, with the only loss coming against Barcelona, to put it on course for setting league records for points and goals scored in a season. Cristiano Ronaldo's league-high 27 goals have him on course to break his own season record of 40 goals.

Barcelona recovered from Saturday's 3-2 loss at Osasuna with a midweek Champions League victory, but the squad has a number of injury concerns ahead of Sunday's match with Xavi Hernandez having missed Tuesday's 3-1 victory at Bayer Leverkusen.

"The Champions League results will have an effect on the league," Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes said on Thursday. "Let's hope that performance recharges us for the league."

While Xavi has a calf injury, Gerard Pique was left out of the team to play Leverkusen following a poor performance in Pamplona and he was also involved in a car accident on the eve of the match in Germany.

With Javier Mascherano and Daniel Alves suspended for the Valencia match, coach Pep Guardiola also probably wanted to rest Pique against Leverkusen with speculation mounting about his ability to maintain concentration.

"Pique seems great, like always. We shouldn't focus on this," Valdes said. "He's the world's best center back. Nothing's changed."

Mali midfielder Seydou Keita has returned from the African Cup of Nations while midfielder Ibrahim Afellay is training again after missing most of the season following knee surgery.

Barcelona eliminated Valencia from the Copa del Rey and Sunday's match will be the third meeting in two weeks. Valencia is coming off a 4-0 rout of Sporting Gijon and can move within five points of Barcelona with a surprise victory.

Madrid players Angel di Maria and Sami Khedira have returned to training after being sidelined for more than a month by injury, while midfielder Lassana Diarra also trained ahead of Saturday's match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Madrid has 58 points with 15 matches to play to eclipse Barcelona's record total of 99 points from 2009-10. Having scored 75 goals in 22 games, Madrid appears certain to pass its own mark of 107 goals during the 1989-90 season.

Madrid is more preoccupied with a defense - especially on set-pieces - that has been surprisingly poor in 2012 with the first leg of the last-16 match at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.

New Sporting Gijon coach Javier Clemente begins Sunday with a tough match against Atletico Madrid, which is unbeaten since Diego Simeone took over as coach in January. Clemente's team is six points away from escaping the relegation zone.

Villarreal is coming off consecutive wins for the first time this season going into Sunday's game at Mallorca, with Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi having returned to training since undergoing knee surgery in October.

In other 24th-round games, it's: Getafe vs. Espanyol; Sevilla vs. Osasuna; Granada vs. Real Sociedad; Athletic Bilbao vs. Malaga; Levante vs. Rayo Vallecano and Zaragoza vs. Real Betis.

TCR Lecture Series I ? How to Start a Retail Business | The Class ...

? ?

From its very inception, The Class Room wanted to be a vehicle and catalyst for positive change within the Houston community. ?We wanted to be a place where not only people could find quality clothing and exclusive brands, but a place where people meet to exchange thoughts, ideas, knowledge, and inspiration. ?In pursuit of these goals, TCR will begin hosting periodic lectures and Q&A sessions on a broad range of topics, from fashion, business, photography, whiskey and wine tastings, and anything else our customers might be interested in learning more about.

The first installment in this series will be a topic many people have come into the store to ask me about, a topic I hold near and dear to my heart, and it?s how to start a retail business. ?I?ll cover the basics of how we started our business and share some lessons we learned the hard way in hopes that it helps the next person out. ?I imagine this could be a 2 or 3 part series, but in this first lecture I will cover:

  1. Our approach to estimating costs, which in turn helped in?
  2. Creating a business plan
  3. Permits, fees, and other government requirements
  4. Financing and loans
  5. Open Q&A

Some may wonder why we would help potential competitors get started. ?One of the main reasons we started TCR was to help Houston ?come up? culturally in hopes it would one day be a destination city the likes of New York, LA, Chicago, etc. ?There are others in the city working to make Houston a fashion center, and we just want to do our part to help. ?Besides, competition is healthy, and there?s enough cake for all of us. ?Let?s break bread together.

To RSVP, please visit the TCR Lecture Series event page on Facebook.

Authorities: Houston was underwater in tub (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Whitney Houston was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, and she had prescription drugs in her room, officials said Monday as the regal pop star's family made arrangements to fly her body home to New Jersey for a funeral at the end of the week.

Authorities said that there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston's body but that it could be weeks before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests that could establish the cause of death. The 48-year-old singer had struggled for years with cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her behavior had become erratic.

Houston was found underwater Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel by a member of her staff at about 3:30 p.m., hours before she was supposed to appear at pre-Grammy Awards gala, police Lt. Mark Rosen said. She was pulled from the tub by members of her staff, and hotel security was promptly notified, Rosen said. She was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

"As of right now, it's not a criminal investigation," he said, refusing to release any further details. "We have concluded our portion of the investigation at the hotel."

Los Angeles coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said there were bottles of prescription medicine in the room. He would not give details except to say: "There weren't a lot of prescription bottles. You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet."

The coroner's office released the body to the family late Monday morning. Two people who spoke with Houston's family said the singer would be taken to New Jersey. The two, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak for the family, said Houston's family raised the possibility of a wake Thursday and a funeral Friday at Newark's Prudential Center, which can seat about 18,000.

Houston was born in Newark and raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years.

A sensation from her first album, Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "How Will I Know," "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

On Monday, mourners continued to leave flowers, balloons and candles at the wrought-iron fence around the tall brick Newark church where she got her start. It sits near an abandoned housing project and the train line leading to New York City.

"She was an inspiration to everybody," said Gregory Hanks, an actor who grew up in the neighborhood and who dropped off a bouquet of flowers. He saw Houston perform at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center years ago.

"I grew up listening to her as a little boy, and to hear her sing, you knew she was special," he said.

Maharashtra, Mumbai -- Europe is becoming increasingly dependent on a high percentage of imported generic medicines from India and China. Without the appropriate level of control and monitoring, this could easily lead to shortages and problems with supply continuity in those smaller markets. Globalisation of the generic medicines industry will bring new challenges to Europe which must be met if the sector is not to be marginalised with respect to both pricing and supply. Innovation has been traditionally perceived as the domain of the research-based originator companies. However, generic medicine companies often spend significant sums on innovating - improving formulations, enhancing delivery systems and finding solutions to patient compliance issues.

In an interview with an Indian CFO, Shantanu Kumar Singh, Taj Pharma Group,

Mr. Singh commented, "A generic medicine treatment is now available within many of the major therapeutic classes and this is often the 'gold standard' option for specific diseases. Opportunities exist to recommend schedules that encourage initiation of treatment with these 'gold standard' generic medicines. This is a positive sign which should increase the uptake of these drugs and potentially generate long-term savings through the use of a safe and effective therapy at an affordable price. "

Singh also mentions, 'In 2011, 7% of revenues from the generics medicine industry were spent on research and development alone. Furthermore, sector investments in manufacturing and development facilities have created a solid base of employment (150,000 direct employees in the EU2) yielding societal benefits that go beyond the realms of healthcare. The potential benefits of the generics medicine industry will not be maximised if the focus is on the lowest price alone. There is a need to increase the volume of generic medicines penetration in the EU market and optimise such key areas as competition with in-patent medicines, co-payment policies, time to market, and ready supply'.

What do you think about the rising costs of health care in Europe?

The provision of an effective and efficient healthcare system in any country is a complex equation balancing appropriate levels of patient care with resources available. Within this lies the need for infrastructures to support both primary and secondary care as well as associated services such as social welfare. Making direct comparisons of costs and best practices across EU member states is difficult; inherent political differences give rise to highly variable systems. No one country is the same. However, one element that is common to all and often the focus of attention is the cost of medicines. Although medicines generally constitute only around 10% of a country's total healthcare budget (with generic medicines only comprising between 1-2%) they are a prime target for cost savings - despite being arguably the most cost-effective part of the healthcare solution. However, even here, the lack of coherent policies and variations in pricing and reimbursement systems, sociodemographics and the management of healthcare within each EU member state make comparisons difficult. What works in one country may be totally inappropriate in another. One thing is certain, the ageing population and changes in lifestyle automatically bring an increased demand for

healthcare and consequent escalation of costs. Pharmaceutical expenditure has been growing at comparable rates across all the major Western markets, with the developing markets exhibiting greater growth due to expanding access to medicines. Prolonged life expectancy in diseases previously associated with high mortality is also extending the use of longer-term chronic therapy treatments, further increasing the burden on healthcare providers. It is a fundamental principle in medicine that pharmaceuticals can delay or even prevent the need for costly hospitalisation in some patients. Therapies to improve quality of life in patients with terminal diseases are also playing a growing role in the physicians' armamentarium. Against this background, it is possible to draw a correlation between life expectancy and pharmaceutical consumption.

Pharmaceuticals undeniably play an essential role in improving and maintaining health, but managing and controlling cost remains a major challenge for society, including governments and payers. Although the percentage of GDP spent on healthcare is fairly consistent in the major EU countries, the absolute amounts available are straining to deliver the desired levels of healthcare.

You're announcing strong first half results today. What's driven that performance?

Shantanu Kumar Singh, CFO (Taj Pharma Group) comments, 'I have to say I'm very, very happy, we're extremely pleased by the results that we announced today'. We're looking at revenues up by 22.6%, we're looking at our operating profits up by 40%, gross margins are almost 50%, fantastic cash flow growth by 74%, and we have a fantastic net debt to equity ratio of 18%. So we're very, very happy with these numbers. I've always said that this is a very well diversified business, and we have three main engines that continuously feed this growth. So this year for the first half, the US Generic business did extremely, extremely well, so we're very happy with that. That has been fantastic growth. Our Injectable business for the first half was very good also, we're very happy with that. And the Brand business, as we had previously said, would this year be split almost evenly between the first half and second half. So the Brand business was stable and we are looking at very good growth in the Brand business for the second half of the year. So overall, all three engines have been performing quite well, and the diversity and diversification has come in and worked again to give us these fantastic results....

Protests erupt across Europe against web piracy treaty (Reuters)

BERLIN/SOFIA (Reuters) ? Tens of thousands of protesters took part in rallies across Europe on Saturday against an international anti-piracy agreement they fear will curb their freedom to download movies and music for free and encourage Internet surveillance.

More than 25,000 demonstrators braved freezing temperatures in German cities to march against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) while 4,000 Bulgarians in Sofia rallied against the agreement designed to strengthen the legal framework for intellectual property rights.

There were thousands more - mostly young - demonstrators at other high-spirited rallies despite snow and freezing temperatures in cities including Warsaw, Prague, Slovakia, Bucharest, Vilnius, Paris, Brussels and Dublin.

"We don't feel safe anymore. The Internet was one of the few places where we could act freely," said Monica Tepelus, a 26-year-old programmer protesting with about 300 people in Bucharest.

Opposition to ACTA in Eastern Europe is especially strong and spreading rapidly. Protesters have compared it to the Big Brother-style surveillance used by former Communist regimes. Downloading films and music is also a popular way for many young Eastern Europeans to obtain free entertainment.

"Stop ACTA!" read a banner carried by one of the 2,000 marchers in central Berlin, where temperatures were -10 Celsius.

"It's not acceptable to sacrifice the rights of freedom for copyrights," Thomas Pfeiffer, a leader of the Greens party in Munich where 16,000 people protested against ACTA, was quoted telling Focus magazine's online edition on Saturday.

Governments of eight nations including Japan and the United Stated signed an agreement in October aiming to cut copyright and trademark theft. The signing was hailed as a step toward bringing ACTA into effect.

Negotiations over ACTA have been taking place for several years. Some European countries have signed ACTA but it has not yet been signed or ratified in many countries. Germany's Foreign Ministry said on Friday it would hold off on signing.

In Sofia, most of 4,000 demonstrators on Saturday were youths. Some wore the grinning, moustachioed Guy Fawkes masks that have become a symbol of the hacker group Anonymous and other global protest movements.

ACTA aims to cut trademark theft and tackle other online piracy. But the accord has sparked concerns, especially in Eastern European countries as well as in Germany which is sensitive about its history with the Gestapo and Stasi secret police, over online censorship and increased surveillance.

"We want ACTA stopped," Yanko Petrov, who attended the rally in Sofia, told state broadcaster BNT. "We have our own laws, we don't need international acts."

SURVEILLANCE

The protesters are concerned that free downloading of movies and music might lead to prison sentences if the ACTA was ratified by parliaments. They also fear that exchanging material on the Internet may become a crime and say the accord will allow for massive online surveillance.

In Warsaw, some 500 protesters demonstrated, brandishing placards saying "No to ACTA," "Down with censorship" and "Free Internet." Several hundred turned out in the southwestern city of Wroclaw, the Baltic port of Szczecin and Poznan.

In Paris, about 1,000 people marched ACTA. "It's a demonstration without precedent because it's taking place in all of Europe at the same time," said Jeremie Zimmermann, spokesman for Internet freedom group Quadrature du Net.

In Prague, about 1,500 people marched against ACTA. Some waved black pirate flags with white skull and crossed bones, and others wore white masks of the Guy Fawkes character.

Some carried banners against the ACTA treaty such as "Freedom to the Internet" and "ACTA attacks Freedom," and chanted "Freedom, Freedom." Smaller gatherings took place in other Czech cities.

The Czech government has held off on ratification of the ACTA treaty, saying it needs to be analyzed.

Romanian state-news agency Agerpres said 2,000 people protested in the Transylvanian city of Cluj against ACTA, carrying banners that said: "Paws off the Internet."

In Croatia, protests were held in Zagreb, Split and Rijeka, with demonstrators, some masked, carrying banners reading "Stop internet censorship."

A group identifying itself as Anonymous hacked into the webpage of Croatian president Ivo Josipovic, who has defended copyright measures. It remained unavailable for several hours.

It also crashed the pages of ZAMP, a Croatian professional service that looks after the protection of composers' rights and copyright, and the Institute of Croatian Music.

In Bratislava, hundreds of young Slovaks rallied, many also wearing Guy Fawkes masks. About 1,000 people demonstrated in Budapest.

Local media reported about 600 people protested at the government building in Vilnius. Lithuania Justice Minister Remigijus Simasius said in his blog some of ACTA's provisions could pose a threat to Internet freedom.

"I don't know where it (ACTA) comes from and how it originated, but I don't like that this treaty was signed skillfully avoiding discussions in the European Union and Lithuania," Simasius wrote.

Boiling Down the Meaning of Life

By the way, I support abortion for the same reason I support the Death Penalty: Necessary in a practical sense, but over all pretty gross...

That's probably raising lots of flames and will burn some karma, but I find it difficult to see practicality in the death penalty. Abortion now, at least indeed has undeniable practicality in some cases, like where the birth would simply kill the mother. It's hard to argue against that point.

But the death penalty -- at least in its incarnation where you don't just shoot/hang/burn the first person you think is guilty -- seems awfully impractical. Compared to life imprisonment it costs the same (or sometimes even more) and has the same outcome of preventing recidivism (re-offending). But, unfortunately it does cause psychological strain on those having to dish out the penalty (that life imprisonment certainly doesn't) and prevents any sort of future moral insight in the guilty, no matter how unlikely you deem it.

A further difference is what some victims feel, namely the warm gut feeling of satisfied murderous revenge... which is most likely what the person who got the penalty also got at some point and is even maybe what they might have gotten the penalty for to begin with. But since the logical outcome of life and death penalty is ultimately the same anyway (death); only one with more delay than the other, you can't really say that the latter is more practical in that regard either. In both cases, they will never see freedom again or get a chance to repeat their action until they die (and if you're not religious and there's no after-life, this lack is permanent).

As such, I see no reason how practicality could decide the question of the use of the death penalty, as it seems to me just as practical (or even a smidgeon less practical, I admit) than real life imprisonment.

Of course, practicality and morality are two different things that need to be evaluated differently, and thus -- at least for me -- the question is a moral, and not a practical one.

William Lucas Walker: Spilled Milk: Prop 8: The Color of Pee-Pee

Our son was 3 years old when Prop 8 passed, too young to understand what was going on but just the right age to articulate his thoughts on those yellow "Yes on 8" signs he saw everywhere. They were, he announced, "the color of pee-pee."

On some level, he got what was happening to his family.

Six months earlier, on May 14, 2008, my children and I had helped their Papa celebrate his 40th birthday. Since Kelly was born here in Los Angeles, we took him on a sort of "This Is Your Life" driving tour. We visited the hospital where he was born, his childhood home in Sylmar, his kindergarten and elementary schools. After that we drove to Pasadena so we could show the kids the spot where Kel and I had met, in the courtyard of All Saints Episcopal Church. Growing up, Kelly's mom had told him that if he was lucky, he'd meet the person he was going to marry at church. As usual, she was right, though I doubt she pictured a bride with my testosterone levels.

The next morning, May 15, a late, unexpected birthday gift arrived. It wasn't the sort of thing you could wrap or slip into a card. It was too big. Huge, in fact. The California Supreme Court had just handed down a landmark verdict: Kelly and I were no longer banned from getting married. That night, after nine years and two children, I was finally able to propose to the love of my life. There were tears, so it was fitting that our daughter captured the moment on the video camera we've used to record every moist event in our family's life together, from her sticky birth to the time she threw up on her grandfather.

Kelly insisted that we marry the first day such unions would become legal, June 17, before -- as he so presciently put it -- "they try to take it away from us." Bastards. That's what I was thinking. Our children will no longer be bastards! Our plan to correct this problem was to take the kids to the county courthouse, pay for our license, and get hitched then and there. But our next-door neighbor had other ideas.

"You finally get the right to marry, and you're not having a wedding?" cried Judy. "You have to have a wedding!" I told her we were on a tight timetable -- three weeks -- and besides, a wedding wasn't in our budget. Judy was hearing none of it. "We'll help you," she said. "We'll make it happen."

"Who'll make it happen?" I asked.

"Your neighbors. The Ladies of La Punta Drive!" I wondered by it was so important for her to see us get married, so I asked, and she answered: "Because we love your family, and we want you to have what we have." A moment I'll never forget.

So the Ladies of La Punta kicked into high gear. Mary, an attorney, forever reversed my low opinion of lawyers by baking us a spectacular, three-tier wedding cake. Alexa augmented a $100 flower budget by grabbing a machete and taking to the street like some feral florist, whacking down enough greenery to turn our living room into a lovely, low-cost garden. As for Judy, she took pictures with a broken wrist, while Lisa handled the nuptial food, demonstrating what every parent of a pregnant bride has known for years: there's nothing like Costco for a quickie wedding reception. Neil, our daughter's godfather and an Episcopal priest, officiated. Our attendants were our children: Elizabeth, then 7, and James, 2-and-a-half. Elizabeth called herself our groomsmaid and never looked more radiant. Or proud. James froze on the aisle, as 2-year-olds have done throughout time. Still, he managed to strew a path of leaves for his parents as they strode toward a day they thought would never arrive.

Nothing can compete with the birth of your kids for sheer depth of joy, but our wedding day was a close second. Kelly and I repeated the vows we'd made to each other at a religious blessing of our union at All Saints Church in 2001. Only this time we were able to use the words "lawfully wedded." We were married, in the eyes of our god, our state, our friends and family, but, most importantly, our children.

2012-02-10-CakeTopper.jpegThe reception rocked. Way back in 1995, I had written the gay wedding episode of Roseanne, the first time a national television audience had witnessed such a(n illegal) thing. At his sitcom reception, Martin Mull, who played one of the grooms, looked aghast at the wedding cake topper Roseanne had concocted for him. She explained herself in her trademark nasal whine: "I couldn't find anything with two grooms, so I ripped off the bride and stuck on one of D.J.'s action heroes from Pocahontas."

I loved that cake topper and had kept it as a souvenir. When Mary told me about the three-level, 18-million-calorie confection she planned to bake, I dug the topper out of storage. And once again, these two little men, plastic but clearly meant for each other, took their place on the frosting, this time as a legally married couple: Mr. and Mr. Captain John Smith. Our children thought it was funny. And it was.

But as Elizabeth and James watched our wedding day unfold, what neither of them realized was this: though it may have seemed to be about us, this day was very much about the two of them. Marriage has a way of providing kids with a sense of stability most children take for granted. Now our kids no longer had to stand on a playground wondering why everybody else's parents could be married but theirs could not.

Five months after our happy day, the "Yes on 8" campaign convinced over half of California's electorate that my family's having equal access to marriage is a Very Bad Thing. I heard them say, a lot, "Why do you need to be married? You guys get the same rights and protections as marriage. It's just called domestic partnerships; really, it's exactly the same," as if pointing in the far distance and saying, "See, there it is, way over there. Squint." I grew up in the segregated South, and those arguments sounded awfully familiar. I was in a domestic partnership for eight years; I've been married for five months. The water does not taste the same.

In the final weeks leading up to the election, as I was driving Elizabeth home from school, we passed a newspaper stand on which someone had plastered a "Yes on 8" bumper sticker. She became visibly agitated, as she did whenever she saw a "Yes on 8" yard sign. She asked if I would stop the car so that we could scrape off the bumper sticker. I explained to her that we live in America and there's a thing called freedom of speech, which means everyone has the right to express their opinion, as long as they're not hurting anyone. She started to cry, saying, "But they are. They're hurting our family. Why do all those people want to hurt our family?" It was one of my lowest moments as a father.

Prop 8 passed that November. Elizabeth's second-grade class had been following the presidential election, so she knew about percentages and majorities. What she was unable to wrap her mind around was the fact that over half the voters in California thought we had no legal right to be a family.

It was months before she told me about the nightmares she'd been having, dreams of people with yellow signs coming to our house with torches, trying set fire to our home. I wish I were making this up. Sadly, no. Thanks, National Organization for Marriage. To you I would say this: if, as your misleading campaign ads bleated for months, you main goal is to protect children, how could you possibly do this to mine?

We got married that very warm, first possible evening in June, not to be part of history or to make some political statement, but because we're a family and want what's best for our kids. Luckily, California's Supreme Court subsequently held that our marriage, and the other 18,000 marriages performed during those five months, had been entered into in good faith and could not be evaporated by a vote. But what about the other families, the ones who weren't lucky enough to marry when they had the chance?

Even with Tuesday's court ruling finding Prop 8 unconstitutional, with the inevitable stays and delays as the case likely works its way to the Supreme Court, for months and probably years we'll have California kids standing on playgrounds wondering why they can't have married parents like their friends.

Cancer Drug May Treat Alzheimer's (LiveScience.com)

A cancer drug has succeeded in reversing Alzheimer's disease in its early stages in mice, according to a new study.

The drug, bexarotene, is designed to reduce levels of amyloid beta, the protein whose presence in the brain has been most closely tied to the development of Alzheimer's.

In a new study, mice treated with bexarotene saw their amyloid beta levels drop 25 percent within six hours and, importantly, they showed a corresponding improvement in their cognitive function.

"The data we provide here really suggest that Alzheimer's could be, in the early stages, a reversible disease," said study author Paige Cramer, a doctoral student in neuroscience at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

The researchers used mice that had a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. After the researchers administered varying doses of bexarotene, they measured levels of amyloid beta in the brain and tested the mice for their abilities in maze running, nest building, smell, and fear conditioning, which is a type of learning.

"They did a lot of different tests of learning and memory and they saw an effect on every single one of them," said Michael Sasner, a research scientist and associate director at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Bexarotene is already approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, a type of skin cancer, and so it may be able to proceed through clinical trials more quickly than drugs not already known to be safe to administer to people.

The study appears in the Feb.10 issue of the journal Science.

A new way to target Alzheimer's

Sasner, who was not involved with the new study, said it overcomes some of the weaknesses of previous Alzheimer's work, in which only one or two tests of cognitive improvement were conducted.

Bexarotene is not the first attempted Alzheimer's treatment to target amyloid beta. But past research has aimed at removing the plaques that amyloid beta can form in the brain, which has not shown any effect on the disease itself.

The difference now, researchers say, is in a better understanding of amyloid beta and the various forms it can exist in. Rather than focusing on the plaques, researchers now think it is the active, soluble form of the protein that is at work in Alzheimer's.

While there are various views on the causes of Alzheimer's, "the predominant view right now is that it's the soluble forms of amyloid beta that are causing the impaired brain function," Cramer said. "Plaques are just sinks, just tombstones that gather amyloid beta."

Bexarotene works by promoting the production of another protein, called Apolipoprotein E, which binds to and clears amyloid beta from the brain.

"This paper lends a lot to the mechanism of how ApoE may be involved in Alzheimer's," Cramer said.

Hurdles remain

It remains to be seen whether the benefits of bexarotene in mice would translate to humans.

"Because we're using an FDA-approved drug, this allows us to translate these basic science findings to the clinic; that's our next goal," Cramer said.

Figuring out the correct dosing presents another challenge. Researchers found that in one case, giving bexarotene over several doses appeared to be less effective than giving it once. Cramer said the reason may be that the drug degrades itself within the body.

Cramer said she and Gary Landreth, the senior investigator on the study, hope to begin a preliminary trial this year, in which they will look for the same changes in beta amyloid levels in humans. If successful, the testing would move to clinical trials.

Bexarotene is currently sold as Targretin; patents on that drug will expire in April.

"There's a long way to go to prove this treatment in humans, but it seems like an exciting thing to follow up on," Sasner said.

Pass it on: A drug has reversed the effects of early-stage Alzheimer's in mice in a new study.

Bettina Elias Siegel: Eating Disorders Caused By Nutrition/Fitness ...

Last week I came across several?news reports?of a study that had me flummoxed.

The C.S. Mott Children?s Hospital National Poll on Children?s Health claimed to have found a ?possible association between school-based childhood obesity prevention programs and an increase in eating disorders?among young children and adolescents.? ? The media coverage of this study?(no doubt influenced by the study sponsors? own?press release)?invariably mentioned that 82% of parents surveyed with children aged 6-14 had such programs in their schools and 30% of these parents reported signs of eating disorders in their children.

This was an alarming finding, to be sure, and I initially assumed that?the ?school-based childhood obesity prevention programs,? in the study must have been heavy-handed interventions where kids are overtly shamed or coerced into losing weight, or why else would eating disorders be on the rise?

But when I dug deeper, I shocked to find that the offending programs were these:

  • Nutrition education at school;
  • Limits on sweets and junk food in the classroom;
  • Providing incentives for children to increase their physical activity; and
  • The taking of height and weight measurements at school.

That?s it. ?All positive programs, with the possible exception of taking body measurements, but those are needed so schools can identify students at risk of serious diseases like Type 2 diabetes, and monitor the overall effectiveness of any intervention. ?(Such measurements are also supposed to be?taken under conditions to protect student comfort and privacy.) ? Meanwhile, health-concerned parents and childhood obesity experts are clamoring for the other items on this list ? nutrition education, limiting junk food in class, more physical activity ?? that are supposedly at the root of a serious problem.

But what negative behaviors, exactly, are resulting from something as benign and helpful as nutrition education? ?Are kids running to the bathroom to throw up after lunch? ?Are they taking laxatives or exhibiting other symptoms of anorexia nervosa?

The ?worrisome behaviors? observed by parents ranged from the objectively troubling ? ?inappropriate dieting? ? to behaviors which could be signs of an eating disorder but which might actually reflect a child?s heightened awareness about food?s effect on health, like a new interest in vegetarianism, looking at food labels and or wanting to eat something other than the food served at family meals (which, of course, might not be healthful if the parents themselves are not educated about nutrition).

But there?s actually no need to try to figure out it whether these reported behaviors are signs of an eating disorder or not. ?Why? ?Because the study did not find ANY of these behaviors to be correlated with school-based ?programs, with the exception of one:

In this study, we found only one worrisome weight-related behavior to be associated with school-based nutrition interventions: ?where there were school-based interventions for physical activity, more parents reported their kids to be ?too physically active? . . . .

Otherwise we did not find school-based obesity prevention programs to be associated with the other worrisome eating and physical activity behaviors among children that parents reported.

So in the end, the only correlation between school-based anti-obesity programs and student behavior found in this headline-making study is that if you provide incentives to increase physical activity, some kids will become ?too active.? ?And how widespread is this ?worrisome behavior?? ?According to the study, it was reported by 11% of parents whose children attended a school with an incentive program, versus 4% of those whose school did not offer such a program. ?And what did those extra 7% of parents mean when they reported ?excessive physical activity?? ?Are their kids suddenly training for triathlons? ?Doing push-ups twenty times a day? ?Or are the parents themselves leading a sedentary lifestyle and therefore unable to objectively view what might just be a normal level of physical activity?

We?ll never know, because the study designers admit that

[o]ur study was not designed to quantify the actual level of physical activity nor to understand what aspects of ?too much? activity parents found most worrisome.

Now, no one denies that eating disorders are a serious problem, and if 30% of parents claim to be seeing potential signs of eating disorders in their children, that?s a finding worthy of concern and further study. ?But the hollow attempt by the?C.S. Mott group to link this phenomenon to school-based interventions (which I can only assume was motivated by a desire to make news) is highly counterproductive in an era in which 30% of our nation?s children are overweight or obese.

Schools are where our children spend the bulk of their waking hours. ?They can provide kids with anywhere from one to sometimes three meals a day, they can allow junk food in the classroom or they can ban it, they can promote recess or they can take it away in favor of test prep, and they can teach children useful information about their bodies and nutrition or they can fail to do so. ?Accordingly, what happens at school undoubtedly shapes a child?s lifelong health habits, for good or for ill. ?Misleading ?findings? like those released by C.S. Mott, which can only discourage those schools trying to do the right thing, simply do not serve our children well.

The health benefits of pregnancy exercise ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Many expectant mothers choose to take pregnancy exercise classes these days, possibly because there are a huge number of health benefits to be gained. Not only this, but prenatal exercise can also help you through the birth of your baby and help you to get your figure back afterwards.

Low energy levels are something that many pregnant women suffer from. This can be made worse by how difficult it can be to find a comfortable sleeping position during the later stages of pregnancy. Just by taking one or two pregnancy exercise classes a week, however, you can increase your energy levels and tire yourself out enough so that sleeping at night is much easier.

Pregnant women also feel general discomfort at other times of the day, as well as when trying to get to sleep. The type of gentle stretching and light exercise that you will do as part of prenatal exercise classes can help to ease back pain, strengthen your abdominal system and improve your circulation.

Another benefit of maternity yoga classes and other types of exercise class is reduced stress levels. Studies have shown that regular exercise can lower your stress levels and boost your spirits, which can be good for your baby.

You may not realise it, but pregnancy exercise can also help you to prepare for childbirth itself. If you get yourself in good shape before the birth, you are likely to be stronger and have more stamina when it comes to labour and delivery.

Getting back into shape after childbirth is always a challenge, but it becomes much easier if you take prenatal exercise classes throughout your pregnancy. It allows you to gain only a healthy amount of weight whilst pregnant, as well as improving muscle tone and strength. This will make it quicker and easier to get your pre-pregnancy body back.

If you want to stay fit even while your are expecting, you can participate in a pregnancy exercise class with other mothers-to-be. For more information, go to the Beez-Kneez web site and checkout the details.

major boosts in premiums for well being insurance - Health Insurance

You have a variety of companies and plans to choose from when trying to purchase the right health care insurance for you and your family.

Health Insurance as An Employee Benefit

Health Insurance in Ohio

The premium for one insurance plan could rise almost 36 percent.

The insurers cite rising costs of medical care and federal health care reforms.

Under a new state law, health insurers must submit their premiums to the state Insurance Department for approval before they take effect.

?It?s getting to the point where health insurance payments are more than the mortgage payment.?

Shield was 13 percent, according to information filed with the state Insurance Department, but the increases range from 3.9 percent on one HMO to 28 percent.

Increases would range from less than 10 percent for 30 percent of members to 10 percent to 15 percent for 45 percent, and more than 15 percent for more than 22 percent of those covered.

Independent Health?s rates would rise 10 percent overall, but the increases would range from 7.4 percent on an HMO to 35.8 percent for its small-group high-deductible health plan, where the deductible is not changing. For 1 percent of the company?s small group subscribers, increases would exceed 21 percent.

HealthNow, the parent of BlueCross BlueShield, filed rates Sept. 1 and has talked to state regulators. Independent Health had notified them of an 11.8 percent increase. The cost of health insurance now is an almost unmanageable burden.

?In these economic times to propose an average 14 percent increase in health care is absurd,? wrote another person who appears to be an insurance agent.

A dental health care professional wrote: ?I wish my income increased as much as my health insurance premiums have.?

?To cover these increasing costs, we must modify premium rates.?

?Independent Health has evaluated the cost of our members? health services and benefit changes, including those mandated in conjunction with health care reform,? the carrier wrote in a letter to small employer groups.
