Domestic violence and dating violence are intertwined | Freehold ...

New Jersey's governor has signed into legislation a new law that would require New Jersey's Department of Education to create new procedures designed to address domestic violence and violence in the context of dating for school districts and college campuses. The new legislation is in response to escalations of violence in our schools, despite previous measures taken such as the New Jersey's Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights and the 2002 policy against Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying.

Despite legislation to counter such trends, dating violence is a growing problem across the country. The problem now extends to young teens as well as young adults, and it often leads to physical abuse and sexual assault.

The new legislation mandates that each school implement policies and procedures with the following elements:

  • An assertion that dating violence will not be tolerated
  • Reporting procedures concerning such violence
  • Methods of responding to such violence
  • Discipline concerning incidents on school premises
  • A listing of warning signs indicating the possibility of dating violence
  • A listing of resources for students seeking help

Though such legislation is badly needed, legislation in itself will not alleviate the problem. The problem of dating violence did not begin in the schools but in our homes. Unfortunately, our children learn from adults when it comes to violence in relationships. If domestic violence is there for children to see in our homes, there is a good chance that such practices will be replicated in their own relationships.

Right now courts are the one locale making every effort to deal with problems of domestic violence in the homes. When children are separated by potentially violent circumstances in the home through protective orders and other court decrees, the chances are less that the pattern will be repeated into the future.
